　三年级教材中新增加的“Letters and sounds”这部分的教学模式，其实就是当下流行的“phonics”教学法。Phonics，即字母拼读法（又译自然拼音）是自然形成的一种发音规则，它主要教授英文字母（letter）与语音（sound）间的对应关系，是美国、加拿大本土孩子的必修课程。在初级英语中70%的单词在拼读时都是有规律可循的。一旦掌握了这种发音规则就不必去翻查字典而能够顺利地将单词读出。一旦孩子们学习了这种不用音标的发音规律可以很快学会拼读不认识的单词，提前进入阅读领域，使英语学习变得简单、快乐、有趣。 　　那么我们又应该如何在教学中实施“phonics”教学呢？简单来说，“phonics”教学可分为四步：发音（Pronunciation）、拼读（Spelling）、运用（Practice）、书写（Writing）。根据小学生的认知规律和“phonics”教学法的知识结构，在具体的教学过程中，我们可以把握以下环节： 　　首先是必须要学会26个字母的发音（name of letter）。这个阶段的时间可以长些，但是必须保证全班有95%以上的学生能够准确的发出26个字母的名称音（name of letter）.这点掌握好了，会给后面的学习带来很大的帮助。建议教师在教授这26个字母的发音时候，可以让每个学生带上一面小镜子，当教师在发音时，学生可以通过模仿以及对这镜子来纠正自己的发音，嘴形及舌位。另外，新教材中，我们把26个字母分开放在每个单元中，教师可以先教学字母发音后再进行拼读教学；或者按照整体教学设计，整合教学内容，先集中进行26个字母的发音教学，等全部完成后再按照每单元的教学安排进行拼读教学。
