回到欧洲后，威尔斯断断续续在继续《唐吉诃德》的拍摄工作。1959年，他在意大利和香港演了两部电影。1960年，他在法国和南斯拉夫又演了两部电影，同时他回到当初呆过的都柏林GateTheatre，排了一出舞台剧。这部舞台剧将莎士比亚的五部历史剧融为一体，为的是将焦点对准本来的配角，现在的主角——福斯塔夫，这并不是威尔斯第一次想这么做。1939年，威尔斯已经写好了《五个国王》的剧本，将莎士比亚的《亨利四世》、《亨利五世》、《亨利六世》、《理查三世》冶为一炉。但当时失败了，所以这个计划一直搁置，成了他的心结。此次重新命名为《午夜钟声》（ChimesatMidnight）在爱尔兰登台上演。同时，他终于完成了《唐吉诃德》的前期拍摄，但后期却一做几十年，到他去世也没有真正完成。1992年，西班牙导演JessFranco根据威尔斯留下的部分底片剪出了一个版本上映，并没得到好评。1961年，威尔斯为意大利电视台导演了一部电视剧。1962年，威尔斯改编了卡夫卡的《审判》（TheTrial），此片辗转拍摄于欧洲各国，由安东尼·珀金斯主演。那段时期，他认识了女演员OjaKodar。1965年，威尔斯终于把《午夜钟声》搬上银幕，他亲自饰演的福斯塔夫极为成功。当年50岁的他，尚未中年发福，须得将衣服垫厚并化老妆才能接近福斯塔夫的形象。二十多年后，威尔斯无须任何乔装便活脱脱一个福斯塔夫。1966年，威尔斯为法国电视台导演了电视片TheImmortalStory，后来在法国的电影院也上映过，颇受欢迎。时隔四年，威尔斯与OjaKodar重逢，两人在生活上和电影上就再也没有分开。在电影生涯的后期，威尔斯的成功总是转瞬即逝，他的大部分时间消磨在各种各样的好片、烂片里，无休止地充当配角、龙套、旁白。多数时候，威尔斯往返于欧美两地，这期间也曾和一些较为重要的欧洲导演合作，例如AbelGance、HerbertWilcox、JulienDuvivier、SergeiBondarchuk、ReneClement、ClaudeChabrol；较重要的美国导演，像JohnHuston、FredZinnemannNicholasRay、RichardFleischer、JackArnold等等。威尔斯并非没有遇到令事业起死回生的机会，科波拉和派拉蒙在替《教父》（TheGodfather）中的维托选角时，也曾考虑过威尔斯。他的年龄、体态、嗓音、演技无疑是上上之选，但科波拉经过反复权衡之后，仍选择了马龙·白兰度，结果起死回生的人就成了白兰度。几年后，威尔斯又获邀为乔治·卢卡斯的《星球大战》（StarWars）中的黑武士配音，这次，却是他主动拒绝了。还有次机会，科波拉筹拍《现代启示录》（ApocalypseNow），本来库尔兹上校角色非他莫属。科波拉起初属意威尔斯饰演库尔兹上校，但最后又一次选定曾合作过的马龙·白兰度，令威尔斯再度与黑暗魔王的角色失之交臂。在威尔斯潦倒的晚年里，新好莱坞的后起之秀们仍对前辈给予极高尊重。他在迈克·尼科尔斯《第22条军规》（Catch·22）中出演准将，并结识了新锐导演彼得·博格丹诺维奇，两人一见如故，从此结为忘年之交，博格丹诺维奇此后更成为威尔斯的代言人。威尔斯终身未写自传，但他和彼得·博格丹诺维奇曾进行长时间的对谈，后来出版的《我是奥森·威尔斯》（ThisisOrsonWelles）是了解威尔斯最重要的途径之一。1969年威尔斯授权美国马萨诸塞州剑桥使用自己的名字建立一座电影院——奥逊·威尔斯电影院，直到1986年。 因为一直收到美国电视台和制片厂的邀约，加上欧洲的小报不放过他和OjaKodar的私人关系，威尔斯毅然放弃了《唐吉诃德》的剪辑，于1970年回到美国。他不再为大制片厂工作，只是参与一些小投资的电影和电视拍摄，他还发现自己成了脱口秀的红人，这段时期他的主要经历集中在完成TheOtherSideoftheWind的摄制，一共花了六年，但最终也未完成。许多曾帮助过他的前辈、晚辈一起出现在其中，影片讲述年老失势的导演拍片所遇到的重重困难，不过是威尔斯自身经历的再现。为这部影片，威尔斯自己掏了1百万美元，又从一家巴黎的伊朗公司筹到1百万美元，这家公司的老板是当时伊朗国王的妻弟MedhiBoushehri，在拍摄过程中，一个西班牙投资人卷走了约25万美元并消失。伊朗公司答应补上资金缺口，但也因此得到了影片80%的版权，他们最终拒绝威尔斯剪辑影片。与此同时，伊朗国内爆发了革命，国王下台，影片的拷贝落入新政府手中，这部电影从此离开了威尔斯。时至今日，还有许多人在为这部影片的命运而努力，威尔斯晚年的挚友PeterBogdanovich为此奔走了20多年，2006年10月初，PeterBogdanovich称“事情现在进行得比较顺利，两三个月内会有确切的消息发布。”1971年，他导演了一个较短的版本的MobyDick，最后没有完成。同年，AMPAS授予他荣誉奖。威尔斯假装不在洛杉矶，请JohnHuston代领。JohnHuston批评了AMPAS这个假惺惺的奖项。1973年，威尔斯完成FforFake。1975年，刚成立几年的AFI授予威尔斯终身成就奖，他在典礼上放映了两段即将完成的TheOtherSideoftheWind。1979年，威尔斯拍了关于摄制Othello一片的谈话纪录片FilmingOthello。这是为西德的电视台拍的，后来也在影院上映过。70年代末，威尔斯出现在一些电视商业广告中，比如一个酒的广告就十分有名。晚年的威尔斯除了在电视节目中露面外，他无法筹集到足够的资金开拍手中写好的大量剧本。此外，他也在洛杉矶的几所电影学校讲课。1985年10月10日，威尔斯死于心脏病。虽然他生前曾表示不愿火化，但在妻女的主持下，遗体还是被火化，骨灰最终埋葬在西班牙一位朋友家中的枯井里。
