[摘要]一个民族的思维方式是该民族文化传统长期积淀的结果。思维方式的特点决定了语言表达方式的特点,因此英汉两种语言的不同之处在一定程度上反映出了中西思维方式的差异。翻译不仅仅是语言的转换,更是思维方式的转换。本文将主要讨论中英两种不同文化思维方式的差异及其对英汉翻译的影响。[关键词]思维方式;差异;英汉翻译翻译是运用一种语言把另一种语言所要表达的思维内容正确而完整地重新表达出来的语言活动。同时翻译也是将一种语言文化承载的意义转换到另一种语言文化中的跨语言、跨文化的交际活动。不同的思维方式会产生不同的语言认知方式,进而影响到翻译策略的选择及翻译的效果。一、中英思维方式的差异思维方式是一个民族或者一个区域在长期的历史发展中所形成的一种思维定势。每个民族都有自己独特的思维方式。不同的民族文化,反映着持某种语言的民族群体千百年来形成的语言心理倾向,体现着持该语言民族的思维特征。英汉两种语言也毫不例外。下面我们将从以下三个方面介绍中英思维方式的不同。(一)抽象思维与具像思维英语民族重抽象思维,而汉民族重具像思维。英语民族擅长于用抽象概念表达具体的事物,比较重视抽象思维能力的运用,而汉民族恰恰相反,崇尚天人合一,在悠久的历史长河中,形成了以具像代表概念,喜欢进行类比推理的思维定式,更习惯于运用具象的方法表达抽象的概念,而不太重视纯粹意义的抽象思维。这种思维形式的不同在语言上表现为:英语常常使用抽象名词来表达复杂的理性概念,而汉语则习惯于使用具体、形象的词语来表达理性概念,例如:1.“I hope my presence here tonight is further proof of the importance we British attach on relations with your great country.”“我希望,今晚我到这里来可以进一步证明,我们英国人非常重视和你们伟大祖国的关系。”英文中的抽象名词presence, proof, importance汉译时都转换成了具体的动作.2.Wisdom prepares the worst; but folly leaves the worst for the day it comes.聪明人防患于未然,愚蠢者临渴掘井。此例中的抽象名词wisdom , folly汉译时都转换成具有共相概念的一类人。以上两例中的抽象名词对于习惯于抽象思维英美人来说,词义明确,措辞简练;但对于习惯于具像思维的中国人来说,必须将这些抽象名词所表达的抽象概念具体化,才符合汉语读者的思维习惯和汉语遣词造句的习惯。具像思维要求取向与取义相结合,特定的思想要寄寓于具体的物象之中,借助具体物象叙事述理,表达概念,情感和意向;而抽象思维则以概念,判断和推理为思维形式,通过对物象的统摄以严密的逻辑语句叙事说理,表情达意。这一点从古诗“秋思”与译文的对比中可见一斑。原诗的前三行是: 枯藤老树昏鸦,小桥流水人家,古道西风瘦马,三行诗句中连续使用了九个名词,并列了九种具象,萧瑟凄凉之景,空旷冷落之感从这九个象语中凸现而出,悠然而生,无须任何赘词冗语。反观英译文:Oe"rold trees wreathed with rotten vine fly evening crows; Neath tiny bridge beside a clear stream flows; On ancient road in western breeze a lean horse goes;译文句式工整,词义贴切对应,韵律和谐自然,但原句中具象组合改换成三个完整的逻辑语句,这既是英语遣词造句的语法要求,更是由于严密的抽象逻辑思维表达形式的需求。(二)直线思维与曲线思维英语民族重直线思维,而汉民族重曲线思维。在表达思想时,英语民族的思维更直截了当,他们习惯先交代要点,而汉民族习惯从侧面说明、阐述外围的环境,最后点出话语的信息中心。英语在谋篇和遣词造句上遵循着从一般到具体、从概括到举例、从整体到个体的原则。如: Soccer is a very difficult sport(topic sentence).
