Shakespeare(莎士比亚)说 "To be or not to be that is a question"是 什么意思?

To be or not to be, that"s a question “生存还是毁灭?这是个问题。” 这句话反映出当时他的痛苦、疑惑,对人生充满怀疑,觉得人活着没有意义,自杀更好,可又对死亡很恐惧,不知人死后会不会下地狱。所以在这段独白里,他非常犹豫,思考着“生存还是毁灭”(To be, or not to be),是应该“默然忍受命运暴虐的毒箭" ( suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune), 也就是活着,忍受生老病死和人世的不公;还是"挺身反抗人世无涯的苦难,通过斗争把它们清扫" (to take arms against a sea of troubles,。 除了莎士比亚《哈姆雷特》的成功因素外,“To be or not to be”之所以成为名言,还有下面原因: 一是因为它单词简单易记,读起来朗朗上口,有诗的韵律和节奏,便于普通民众传诵流传; 二是因为“To be or not to be”这句在不同语境中有不同的意思,比如“是或不是”,“干或不干”,“是生,还是死?”... 所以很多人喜欢套用这种句式

Shakespeare’s Sister

It would have been impossible, completely and entirely, for any woman to have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare. Let me imagine, since facts are so hard to come by, what would have happened had Shakespeare had a wonderfully gifted sister, called Judith, let us say. Shakespeare himself went, very probably—his mother was an heiress—to the grammar school, where he may have learnt Latin—Ovid, Virgil and Horace—and the elements of grammar and logic. He was, it is well known, a wild boy who poached rabbits, perhaps shot a deer, and had, rather sooner than he should have done, to marry a woman in the neighbourhood, who bore him a child rather quicker than was right. That escapade sent him to seek his fortune in London. He had, it seemed, a taste for the theatre; he began by holding horses at the stage door. Very soon he got work in the theatre, became a successful actor, and lived at the hub of the universe, meeting everybody, knowing everybody, practising his art on the boards, exercising his wits in the streets, and even getting access to the palace of the queen. Meanwhile his extraordinarily gifted sister, let us suppose, remained at home. She was as adventurous, as imaginative, as agog to see the world as he was. But she was not sent to school. She had no chance of learning grammar and logic, let alone of reading Horace and Virgil. She picked up a book now and then, one of her brother"s perhaps, and read a few pages. But then her parents came in and told her to mend the stockings or mind the stew and not moon about with books and papers. They would have spoken sharply but kindly, for they were substantial people who knew the conditions of life for a woman and loved their daughter—indeed, more likely than not she was the apple of her father"s eye. Perhaps she scribbled some pages up in an apple loft on the sly, but was careful to hide them or set fire to them. Soon, however, before she was out of her teens, she was to be betrothed to the son of a neighbouring woolstapler. She cried out that marriage was hateful to her, and for that she was severely beaten by her father. Then he ceased to scold her. He begged her instead not to hurt him, not to shame him in this matter of her marriage. He would give her a chain of beads or a fine petticoat, he said; and there were tears in his eyes. How could she disobey him? How could she break his heart? The force of her own gift alone drove her to it. She made up a small parcel of her belongings, let herself down by a rope one summer"s night and took the road to London. She was not seventeen. The birds that sang in the hedge were not more musical than she was. She had the quickest fancy, a gift like her brother"s, for the tune of words. Like him, she had a taste for the theatre. She stood at the stage door; she wanted to act, she said. Men laughed in her face. The manager — a fat, loose-lipped man—guffawed. He bellowed something about poodles dancing and women acting—no woman, he said, could possibly be an actress. He hinted — you can imagine what. She could get no training in her craft. Could she even seek her dinner in a tavern or roam the streets at midnight? Yet her genius was for fiction and lusted to feed abundantly upon the lives of men and women and the study of their ways. At last—for she was very young, oddly like Shakespeare the poet in her face, with the same grey eyes and rounded brows—at last Nick Greene the actor-manager took pity on her; she found herself with child by that gentleman and so—who shall measure the heat and violence of the poet"s heart when caught and tangled in a woman"s body?—killed herself one winter"s night and lies buried at some cross-roads where the omnibuses now stop outside the Elephant and Castle. That, more or less, is how the story would run, I think, if a woman in Shakespeare"s day had had Shakespeare"s genius.

William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616)[a] was an English poet and playwright who is now regarded as the greatest writer of the English language and the world"s pre-eminent dramatist.[1] His surviving works include 38 plays,[b] two long narrative poems, 154 sonnets, and a few other poems. He is often called England"s national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.[2] Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, Shakespeare moved to London, where he found success as an actor, writer, and part-owner of the playing company the Lord Chamberlain"s Men (later known as the King"s Men). He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records survive concerning Shakespeare"s private life, and considerable speculation has been poured into this void,[3] including questions about his sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were actually written by others.[4] Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1590 and 1613. He at first wrote mainly comedies and histories, genres that he raised to a peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until 1608, producing what are considered some of the greatest in the language, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth. In the last phase of his career, Shakespeare turned to tragicomedies and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of Shakespeare"s plays were published during his lifetime in editions of variable quality and accuracy; and in 1623, two of his former acting colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his works that included all but two of the plays now recognised as Shakespeare"s. Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day; but it was not until the eighteenth century that his reputation began its rise to the heights it enjoys today. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare"s genius; and in the nineteenth century, the Victorians hero-worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry".[5] In the twentieth century, Shakespeare"s work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. The life of Shakespeare 作文

Shakespeare ,more perhaps than any other writer ,made full use of the greatest resources of the English Language .Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English ;Shakespeare in his works used about twenty—five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare uses it .Such a study is well worth the effort, even though some aspects of English usage ,and the meaning of many words ,have changed since Shakespeare"s day. However ,it is surprising that we should know comparatively little about the life of the greatest English author. We know that Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford—on—Avon ,and that he died there in 1616.He almost certainly attended the Grammer School in the town ,but of this we cannot be sure .We know he was married there in 1582 to Anne Hathaway and that he had three children .We know that he spent much of his life in London writing his masterpieces .But this is almost all that we do know . However ,what is important about Shakespeare"s life is not its incidental details but its products ,the plays and the poems .For many years scholars have been trying to add a few facts about Shakespeare"s life to the small number we already possess and for an equally long tine critics(批评)have been theorizing(理论化)about the plays .Sometimes ,indeed ,it seems that the poetry of Shakespeare will disappear under the great mass of comment that has been written upon it . Fortunately this is not likely to happen .Shakespeare"s people have long delighted not just the English but lovers of literature everywhere ,and will continue to do so after the scholars and critics and all their works have been forgotten.

Shakespeare was born and raised in the picturesque Tudor market town of Stratford-on-Avon, a local government and commercial center within a larger rural setting, and it is likely that the surrounding woodlands of his boyhood were reflected in the play As You Like It, with its Forest of Arden. Shakespeare"s mother Mary Arden was a daughter of the local gentry, holding extensive properties around Stratford-on-Avon in his name. In marrying Shakespeare"s father, the glover and tenant farmer John Shakespeare, Mary Arden took a step down the social ladder of the Elizabethan Age, for her husband was of the yeoman class, a notch or two below the gentry. Yet long before his son"s fame as a playwright fell to his good fortune, John Shakespeare"s talents enabled him to rise modestly on his own accord as he became a burgess member of the town council. Despite evidence of a family financial setback when William was fifteen, Shakespeare"s family was comfortable, if not privileged. Shakespeare"s eventual fame and success spilled over to his parents in the form of both money and title, and on the eve of his death in 1601, Queen Elizabeth granted the Bard"s father a "gentleman"s" family coat-of-arms.

William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564; died 23 April 1616)[a] was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world"s pre-eminent dramatist.[1] He is often called England"s national poet and the "Bard of Avon".[2][b] His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays,[c] 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.[3] Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain"s Men, later known as the King"s Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare"s private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.[4] Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613.[5][d] His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime. In 1623, two of his former theatrical colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that included all but two of the plays now recognised as Shakespeare"s. Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare"s genius, and the Victorians worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry".[6] In the twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.E智网为您解答,希望可以帮助到你!

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born to John Shakespeare and mother Mary Arden some time in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. There is no record of his birth, but his baptism was recorded by the church, thus his birthday is assumed to be the 23 of April. His father was a prominent and prosperous alderman in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, and was later granted a coat of arms by the College of Heralds. All that is known of Shakespeare"s youth is that he presumably attended the Stratford Grammar School, and did not proceed to Oxford or Cambridge. The next record we have of him is his marriage to Anne Hathaway in 1582. The next year she bore a daughter for him, Susanna, followed by the twins Judith and Hamnet two years later. Seven years later Shakespeare is recognized as an actor, poet and playwright, when a rival playwright, Robert Greene, refers to him as "an upstart crow" in A Groatsworth of Wit. A few years later he joined up with one of the most successful acting troupe"s in London: The Lord Chamberlain"s Men. When, in 1599, the troupe lost the lease of the theatre where they performed, (appropriately called The Theatre) they were wealthy enough to build their own theatre across the Thames, south of London, which they called "The Globe." The new theatre opened in July of 1599, built from the timbers of The Theatre, with the motto "Totus mundus agit histrionem" (A whole world of players) When James I came to the throne (1603) the troupe was designated by the new king as the King"s Men (or King"s Company). The Letters Patent of the company specifically charged Shakespeare and eight others "freely to use and exercise the art and faculty of playing Comedies, Tragedies, Histories, Inerludes, Morals, Pastorals, stage plays ... as well for recreation of our loving subjects as for our solace and pleasure."

the second best bed furniture。

Why is Shakespeare so great in English literature?

His plays appealled to a very wide audience as they werer often funny or violent with a heavy political subtext, most topics of his plays are still relevant now and always will be,he was a darn funny writer who used many different types of humour, his plots were often fairly complex but still reasonably easy to follow. He knew how to play to his audience at the same time as challenging them. The complexity of the plays, the language used,Shakespeare invented over 1700 words that we still use today,as well a numerous phrases that are commonly used now,‘it"s Greek to me" being one of them,he invented the word eyeball, the phrase hot-blooded and even the word epileptic ffs! He has stood the test of time, and will continue to.He"s widely regarded the the world"s greatest writer!Who elses plays have been translated into every language and performed more than any other play has ever been performed? Shakespeare was a genius of his time,a turning point in English literature, plot and subplot after subplot, his writings are a verifiable onion, forever another layer, sharp and bittersweet and yet full of joy and passion. Usually, the lack of pleasure comes from a lack of understanding. It can be quite taxing to just read his plays,a good alternative is my personal favourite,Much Ado About Nothing which is on DVD.You don"t even need to leave the house!Watch it,let yourself get swept away in the language and enjoy it. --------------------- All the reasons above, plus he created so many words and expressions that we still use today, that he told intereting stories in an interesting way.George Bernard Shaw thought he was better, but it was just jealosy. In English Shakespeare reigns,in Spanish Lope de Vega a contemporary of Shakespeare reigns,he wrote over 2300 plays, some of which were the same stories at Shakespeare(who wrote 37 plays) told; Julius Ceasar,Romeo and Juliet, and more. But Shakespeare is better known because his plays transcend England, but Lope"s are decidedly Spanish. --------------------- Shakespeare is probably the best because his writing marks the great turning-point in English literature. His characters are among the first to show their internal thoughts, their 3-dimensional conflicts, and express them in some of the most eloquent speeches and language ever written. The stories he wrote weren"t new,but the understanding he brought to the people in them has rarely been surpassed. His characters come alive on the page and on the stage and screen.
