 其实,我们知道, second 1anguage与first language相对,而foreign 1anguage和non-native language是与mother tongue和native 1anguage相对的。  first language和mother tongue和native 1anguage的共同特点是:(1)最早习得的语言,常常是在家庭环境中习;(2)熟练程度高。语言直觉强。  second language,foreign language和non-native language的共同特点是:(1)是一种双语现象;(2)在掌握的时间顺序上次于第一语言;(3)熟练程度一般不如第一语言;(4)习得方式一般是学校教育、家庭教育或自学。  在我国,除了少数民族学习汉语和汉族入学习少数民族语言时可以把对方的语言称作第二语言外,中国人在中国境内学习的其它国家的语言一般情况下都应称作外语。  首先,在语言环境方面,第二语言与外语有着根本的差别。第二语言学习者一般都有一个比较自然的语言环境。周围有众多的该语言的本族语使用者。由于种种原因,他们之间可能会有各种各样的联系。同时,由于该语言可能是“官方语言的一种(如英语、法语在加拿大,英语在印度等),新闻媒介、官方文件、广告等等为学习者提供了一个比较真实和自然的语言环境,而“外语”学习者一般来说则很难有这样的语言环境。  其次,从语言输入来看,第二语言学习者一方面有自然的语言环境,另一方面,如果他通过课堂教学学习该语言,教师的语言程度、同学的语言程度等都给他提供了较理想的“可理解性输入”(comprehensible input),其中包括“针对外国人的谈话”(foreigner talk),“教师语”(teacher talk)、“同伴语”(peer talk)等;而外语学习者则不同,他一般不可能得到foreigner talk之类的输入,由于外语教师语言水平总体上不能与第二语言教师相比,teacher ta1k的质量和数量都不如第二语言教学课堂, peer talk在很大程度上也受到限制。例如,交际教学法在国外提出多年,我们应当如何看?关于这,除学术理论上的解剖和辩论外,还有个可行性问题。几年前,北京外国语学院办过一个中学教师进修班,用交际法教学。在结业时,一位中学教师对授课老师说,“你的方法好是好,可是回到原校,我们决不能用同样的方法教自己的学生,原因是觉得自己的英语水平不高”。Peter Medgyes也说,用交际法,“教师们必须有非凡的才能:是多面手,又懂得高技术,有神仙般的魔力,同时又是个有血有肉的凡人”。据他看,匈牙利的英语教师,由于语言能力有缺陷,已经自顾不暇,根本没有时间去考虑学生们除教材内容外还有什么别的需要。(Medgyes,Peter “Queries from a Communicative Teacher”, in ELT Journal 40/2(1986):107)  再者,第二语言学习者和外语学习考在影响学习过程的情感因素方面也有着本质的区别。在第二语言学习环境中,由于第二语言在本语言社团的特殊地位,学习者往往有强烈的学习愿望和动机。如由于英语在印度和一些非洲国家是一种影响择业和晋升的重要因素,学习者的工具性学习动机就很强;再如,在美国和德国,这些国家的语言成为移民和客籍工人减少种族歧视、争取同等社会待遇和机会的工具,因此他们学习这些语言有着强烈的综行性动机。所有这些人与中国学生在本国学习外语有根本的差别。这并不是说中国学生缺乏学习外语的动机,但中国学生很少会有对外语学习有更大促进作用的综合性动机,而且就整体而言,中国学生学习外语的工具性动机也不十分明确。这不能不说是中国外语教学的一个严重的缺陷。就情感因素的其它方面而言,如态度、个人性格等,由于语言学习环境的制约,其潜在的对外语学习过程的促进作用也受到极大的限制。  更为重要的是,由于第二语言、外语与母语之间的关系的不同,母语知识对另一种语言知识的习得的影响也不一样。大家知道,母语交际能力在学习另一种语言时会发生正负迁移现象。在欧美国家,由于学习者所要学习的第二语言一般都是与他们母语有着同源关系的语言,相近的文化背景和相似的语言特征使得他们语言能力的正迁移远远超过负迁移。与此根本不同的是,中国学生由于所学外语一般是与母语分属不同语系,文化传统、语言特征,包括语音、语法和文字系统迥然相异,他们学习中所遇到的困难远远超过欧美学生。  最后,由于以上种种原因,第二语言和外语学习者所能掌握的语言熟练程度就大不一样。第二语言学习者往往能达到native like(与本族语者相似)的程度,特别是在言语表达方面,而外语学习者就很难达到相同的程度。  这样看来,外语教学有着与第二语言教学完全不同的自身的特点,中国学生学习外语更有其特殊的地方。我们要问:尽管随着改革开放的不断深入,中国与世界的交往越来越多,英语的运用也越来越广泛,然而我们的学生中到底有多少人真正是对外语感兴趣的,有强烈的自我动力的;他们尽管一周有4--6节的外语课,总数加起来,不过4--5个小时,这点时间的外语接触够吗?在45分钟的英语课上,老师用外语授课的时间到底有多少,学生能开口说外语的时间又有多少?有多少学生的家庭有外语环境,有多少学生父母懂外语,学生在课余时间主动或被动接触外语的机会又有多少?学生在初、高中阶段6年中只学习12本英语教材,而他们课外英语阅读量又有多少?我们尽可以看到一些十分成功的外语教学观摩课,在这些观摩课上英语教师和学生配合的天衣无缝,听说读写的操练样样俱全,加上朗诵,短剧,多媒体演示,教学者为之兴奋,听课者为之激动。然而,在一年365天的外语教学中,这样的课又有多少呢?这本帐,从事英语教学的一线教师心中应该是明白的,说到底,我们中、小学的英语教学至今大多数仍随着升学考试指挥棒在转,跳不出“应试教育”的模式。  中国学生在学习外语的过程中不泛姣姣者,那么他们学好外语的秘诀是什么呢?从近年来上海外国语大学附中的毕业生情况来看,他们外语基本功非常扎实,进入大学后与普通中学的学生相比,其整体外语能力远胜于普通中学的毕业生。虽然外语附中对外语教学有着特殊的要求,课时较多,但学生的其它各门功课成绩不但没因为在外语上化的时间多而受到影响,反而超过了其它重点中学的学生,前几年上海外国语大学附中曾出了一批上海市文理科高考总分的状元。这当然是多方面因素的作用,但其成功的经验值得我们深思。这种外语好,其它功课也差不了;其它功课好,外语却不一定好的现象,更值得我们去探讨。 反思之四:外语教学必须“以人为本”  树立主体意识,造就独立人格,已成为现代国际教育思想变革的一个重要标志。在各个教育领域,人们越来越强调“以学习者为中心”的教学方法。人们意识到,对学习的最终结果起决定作用的是学习者本人。任何成功的教育必须充分考虑到学习主体的个性特征。在外语教学中,在理论上“无懈可击”的教学方法层出不穷,但在真正广泛运用时却常常不能达到预期的目的。要想真正搞清其中的原因,必须研究学习主体,研究学生的非智力因素,在素质教育上寻根求源。  人们越来越意识到学习者之间存在着差异。学习者并非可塑的泥土,可由老师任意捏成其它的东西。他们各自有独特的性格、动机和学习风格,所有这些特征都会影响学习者在课堂上的表现。现在,我们的外语教师终于明白了这样一个道理:外语教学中考虑的重点不再应该是“我们该教些什么?让我们设计一个大纲、一套教材来教这些内容”,而应该是:(1)促进外语习得的条件是什么?(2)我们如何在外语教学课堂中创造这些条件?  教师的职责一是教给学生知识,二是教给学生如何获取知识的知识,即培养学生获取知识的能力。一是“鱼”,二是“渔”,授之于鱼,不如教之于渔,外语教学的过程中,“渔”就是发挥学生的主体作用,调动学生学习外语的主观能动性,培养学习者的学习策略和学习方法,这远比简单地“授之于鱼”要重要的多,对学生也有用的多。 反思之五:跨文化意识的培养,是外语教学的一个重要组成部分  文学,可以视为从文化中升华出来的理想的结晶,它象黑暗中的灯火一样引导人们摸索前进。  一个人,一个民族对文学的亲疏态度,是衡量其文化素质的最高一段标尺。  当然,这里所说的文学,是指通常意义上的“纯文学”,即闪烁着理想光芒的文学。  跨文化意识的培养,是外语教学的一个重要组成部分。词汇是文化信息的浓缩。对外语词义的准确理解,需要对外族文化有比较深刻的理解。外族文化知识的获得,一是通过对该族历史文化的研究和学习,二是通过对该族语言文学作品的研读,三是通过对该族文化生活习惯、生活方式等的了解。而通过读原版英文经典著作,是达到这三条的捷径。  凡是学习过许国章英语的人决不会忘记,在传统外语教学中,文学占有相当的比重。60年代至70年代,ESP (English for Specific Purpose, 特殊用途英语)兴起并很快成为一种普遍趋势。有人曾责问,学习Dickens 和Shelley等人的作品,对阅读科技文献何用之有?70年代后期,文学内容几乎从外语课中消失。80年代,人们对文学又有了新的兴趣。文学在外语教学进程中的作用和地位与传统外语教学有了根本的不同。传统外语教学中的文学教学本身就是一种目的,现在人们更加注重文学教学的作为一种达到某一目的的方法的功能。这一目的就是掌握某一语言的使用技能,然而却缺少人文素质教育方面的考虑。学习人文科学可以使人对社会和人生能有正确的认识。  文学教学对外语交际能力的培养至少有这样三个方面的作用:(1)文学是语言的艺术。文学作品可以为学习者提供丰富多彩、生动有趣的语言输入;(2)文学作品中集中反映了一个民族文化历史发展的轨迹,通过大量阅读文学作品,可以使学习者对目的语社团文化有一个比较深刻的认识;(3)经典文学作品包含着深刻的人生哲理,可以从更高层次上提升人的文化素质,乃至整体素质。日本从1985年开始,就筹划实施了一项“四合一”人才培养计划,即在赤胆忠心,报效国家具有健康体魄的前提下,集科技、文学、经贸、外语于一身。十年来,日本已在培养“四合一”人才方面取得了举世瞩目的成就。目前在“丰田”、“东芝”、“三菱”、“松下”、“三洋”等这些驰名全球的跨国公司里,都拥有半数的“四合一”人才,他们个个以通才的能力和风貌,打入各个领域,创造了一个又一个奇迹。 反思之六:“学会做人,学会学习”是外语学习者成功之首要因素  从教育心理学的角度看,学习过程中影响学习效果的最大因素之一是学习者的情感控制。近几十年来,人们越来越意识到在外语学习过程中,学习者的情感因素,包括动机和态度等对外语学习的效果乃至成败起到相当大的作用。如何将素质教育理论引入外语教学是当前外语教学战线的一大课题。外语学习成功的因素中,除了智力因素外,更重要的是那些非智力因素的作用。据《文汇报》载(1993,11,19):上海市教育科学研究所对全市十个区1480名初中预备半和三个县的1622名六年级学生进行调查测试和统计分析,发现学习困难学生中有57.8%是属于动力型困难的学生,其具体表现在学习动机、兴趣、情感、意志和行为习惯等方面存在较为严重的缺陷。这从一个侧面说明了动机和态度在外语学习过程中的重要作用。  外语教师的教学重点是放在教学内容,教学大纲和考试形式上呢,还是将教学注重点转移到学生的性格、兴趣、情绪等方面的培养和控制?这是,现代教育思想转变的重大原则问题。事实证明,认为自己“民主、开放、平静、友好、体贴、乐于助人、聪明、富于逻辑性和快乐”的人,一般来说,其学习外语成功的可能性要大于与上述性格相反或相差极大的学习者。另外,在外语学习过程中,由于外界因素的影响,学习者会出现焦虑沮丧烦躁不安等情况,外语教师作为教学活动的组织者,应注意对外语学习者情感因素的培养和控制。  外语学习区别于婴儿学习母语过程的一个重要的方面是“情感”。一般来说,婴儿学习母语是一个自然的社会过程,学习语言是学习一种表达情感的方法,而外语学习则涉及到角色转换等诸多的社会心理因素,有时甚至涉及到个人尊严、伦理道德等方面的问题。  对某外族文化抱有好感、向往其生活方式、渴望了解其历史、文化及社会知识,这是一种十分有利于学习该文化的语言的因素。相反,对某外族文化抱有轻蔑、仇视或厌恶的态度就很难令人想象持这种 态度的人能认真地去学习该文化的语言。如果对某一语言抱有好感,对该语言的结构和表达法感到新奇,那么对这样的学习者来说学习该门外语是一个不断发现新鲜事物的过程,学习对他来说是一种乐趣,是一种探索;相反,把外语想象得过难,觉得外语表达法别扭,持这样的态度的学习者必然会对外语学习畏之如虎,学习的效果毫无疑问会受其影响。学习者对学习材料是否有兴趣、对教学活动的组织形式是否有兴趣,这些都会影响学习者的情绪和学习效果。教师的个性也是学生改变对外语学习态度的一个重要因素。教师的热情、活泼、博学多才会对学生和学习内容产生积极的影响。  国外有些研究者根据这些个人因素对外语习得过程影响的方式和程度,通过实验和对比,描述了“理想的外语学习者”(the good language learner)的一些基本特征是:  (1)能够适应学习环境中的团体活力(group dynamics),克服负焦虑和干扰因素。  (2)寻找各种机会使用目的语。  (3)利用所提供的机会练习倾听针对他输出的目的语并作出反应,即注意意义而非形式。  (4)通过学习技巧来补充与目的语社团成员直接交往的不足。  (5)至少在语法学习的初始阶段,是个少年或成年而非小孩。  (6)具备足够的分析技巧和接受、区分和贮存外语的特征,并监测错误。  (7)具备学习外语的强烈“整体”动机并具有强烈的“任务”动机。  (8)愿意冒险,勇于实践。  (9)能够适应不同的学习环境。  从以上九条来看,一个成功的外语学习者首先应该是一个全面发展,身心健康,人格完美的人。这一点是和我们当前大力提倡的素质教育理论不谋而合的。
