new chapter维生素怎么样?new chapter维生素有效吗?

Just then, the doorbell rang -- "Oh, good Lord, they"re here!" said Aunt Petunia frantically -- and a moment later, Dudley"s best friend, Piers Polkiss, walked in with his mother. Piers was a scrawny boy with a face like a rat. ... Another time, Aunt Petunia had been trying to force him into a revolting old sweater of Dudley"s (brown with orange puff balls) -- The harder she tried to pull it over his head, the smaller it seemed to become, until finally it might have fitted a hand puppet, but certainly wouldn"t fit Harry. Just then Frantically Scrawny Revolting Puff Pull over Puppet Just then, the doorbell rang -- "Oh, good Lord, they"re here!" said Aunt Petunia frantically -- and a moment later, Dudley"s best friend, Piers Polkiss, walked in with his mother. Piers was a scrawny boy with a face like a rat. 例:Tothe east,Iranisfranticallyadvancingitsnuclearproject, whichmostIsraelisandmostofthe world"sintelligenceagenciesbelieveisdesignedtoproducenuclear weapons. If you describe a person or animal asscrawny, you mean that they look unattractive because they are so thin. 瘦骨嶙峋的[表不满] 例: ...a scrawny woman with dyed black hair. … Another time, Aunt Petunia had been trying to force him into a revolting old sweater of Dudley"s (brown with orange puff balls) -- The harder she tried to pull it over his head, the smaller it seemed to become, until finally it might have fitted a hand puppet, but certainly wouldn"t fit Harry. If you say that something or someone isrevolting, you mean you think they are horrible and disgusting. The smell in the cell was revolting. If someonepuffsonorata cigarette, cigar, or pipe, they smoke it. He lit a cigar and puffed on it twice. 拉开或拆开 pull away开走 使离开 pull down拆毁 pull in 车停下,进站靠岸 pull off成功的完成 扯下脱去 pull on 穿戴 pull through渡过难关 使恢复健康 pull up使停下 pull out 离开,撤离;拔出;渡过难关;恢复健康;折叠的大张插页;飞机进场重新飞起 pull something on someone 在…

语法填空 kwame is our odopted

As you well know, Kwame is our adopted son from Africa. He is really timid and loves to be by himself a lot of the time. One thing I do know about Kwame, is that he has a very creative mind, so he often daydreams. Once he reads from a book or a novel, he goes off into his own fantasy world. Unfortunately, he has not been able to put such creativity into his studies in school. He says the subjects in school are boring and quite hard to understand.I used FAST(in) in my marriage and now the goal was to introduce it to the entire family. I needed to know what Kwame was considering as important and how we would use FAST(in) to solve it.When I got to Kwame"s room, I saw him lying down on his bed, looking at the ceiling, lost in his fantasy world."Kwame, everyone is down stairs, why don"t you come and join us?" I said calmly."I don"t want to see anyone, I just want to be by myself," Kwame said in a low and sad tone."Kwame, I know you love to be by yourself, but I can tell something is wrong. A real man must learn how to share his concerns with others and find ways to solve them. Most men don"t do that. You are not most men Kwame, you are different and special," I said. On hearing that, Kwame sat up and told me what had happened in school; how he tried to impress a certain girl ( Evelyn Richardson) and how he ended up embarrassing himself.I did my best to pay attention to Kwame because he was explaining it to me with the utmost level of importance. I didn"t want to say Kwame was paying attention to the wrong thing and he should forget about girls now and simply concentrate on his books. However, I know what it means for a dad not to pay attention to what his young son finds important.I was a victim of that, because my dad did that to me. When I needed someone to talk to about my life as a teenager, he was always busy and never had my time. When my father did have my time, he only made fun of me and said I wasn"t paying attention to the serious things in life. It really shocked me.This caused me to resolve never to talk to my father about my personal issues again. It resulted in me joining bad gangs and taking drugs with them. I promised myself I wasn"t going to do that with any of my children.Unfortunately, Chuk became a victim as well from me. I needed to make amends, so Kwame was my second chance."Kwame, what do the students know Evelyn for?" I asked."Well, She is pretty and popular." he replied. Is that all there is to Evelyn? I asked again."I"m sure there is more, I just don"t know yet. I guess it is because I"m not close to her," he replied."Ok, Kwame, I know you have a creative mind; how many students know you have a creative mind?" I asked further."I don"t know, people seem to concentrate more on what I wear than what I can do," he said."If I gave you something that could cause people to know you have a very creative mind, will you take it?" I asked."Of course," he replied."Ok son, let me tell you what we are going to do."So, I explained what Fast(in) was and how I used it to improve my relationship with my wife. I said we would find a way for him to use Fast(in) in school to put his creative mind into use."Does that mean I would have a method of learning in a creative way?" he asked inquisitively."Hmmm, I like the sound of that," he said.I said, Let"s call it "THE FAST(IN) METHOD OF LEARNING""Cool !!!!!!!!" Kwame said, as he stood up and began to jump on his bed."So, will this help me to get close to Evelyn?"I laughed at Kwame, and said by the time we are done with it, Evelyn would be the least of his worries."Dad, are you sure?" Kwame said laughing."Let"s go downstairs and get something to eat, I"m hungry," I said."Me too," he replied. And so, we headed downstairs to meet the others to have a wonderful dinner."Mission accomplished," I whispered in the ear of my wife, as we stood back and watched the children talking with each other and laughing while they all sat at the dinner table. They were all at peace again. Fast(in) had just been introduced into their lives and our fingers were crossed with the hope that it would bring the change they all desperately desired and needed.

Alice in Wonderland - Chapter II (with comments)

CHAPTER II The Pool of Tears ‘Curiouser and curiouser!" cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English); ‘now I"m opening out like the largest telescope that ever was! Good-bye, feet!" (for when she looked down at her feet, they seemed to be almost out of sight, they were getting so far off). ‘ Oh, my poor little feet, I wonder who will put on your shoes and stockings for you now, dears? I"m sure I shan"t be able! I shall be a great deal too far off to trouble myself about you: you must manage the best way you can;—but I must be kind to them," thought Alice, ‘or perhaps they won"t walk the way I want to go! Let me see: I"ll give them a new pair of boots every Christmas." [COMMENT1] And she went on planning to herself how she would manage it. ‘They must go by the carrier," she thought; ‘and how funny it"ll seem, sending presents to one"s own feet! And how odd the directions will look!Alice"s Right Foot, Esq.Hearthrug, near The Fender, (with Alice"s love). Oh dear, what nonsense I"m talking!" Just then her head struck against the roof of the hall: in fact she was now more than nine feet high, and she at once took up the little golden key and hurried off to the garden door. Poor Alice! It was as much as she could do, lying down on one side, to look through into the garden with one eye; but to get through was more hopeless than ever: she sat down and began to cry again. ‘ You ought to be ashamed of yourself," said Alice, ‘a great girl like you," (she might well say this), ‘to go on crying in this way! Stop this moment, I tell you!" But she went on all the same, shedding gallons of tears [COMMENT 2] , until there was a large pool all round her, about four inches deep and reaching half downthe hall. After a time she heard a little pattering of feet in the distance, and she hastily dried her eyes to see what was coming. It was the White Rabbit returning, splendidly dressed, with a pair of white kid gloves in one hand and a large fan in the other: he came trotting along in a great hurry, muttering to himself as he came, ‘Oh! the Duchess, the Duchess! Oh! won"t she be savage if I"ve kept her waiting!" Alice felt so desperate that she was ready to ask help of any one;so, when the Rabbit came near her, she began, in a low, timid voice, ‘If you please, sir—" The Rabbit started violently, dropped the white kid gloves and the fan, and skurried away into the darkness as hard as he could go.Alice took up the fan and gloves, and, as the hall was very hot, she kept fanning herself all the time she went on talking: ‘Dear, dear! How queer everything is today! And yesterday things went on just as usual. I wonder if I"ve been changed in the night? Let me think: was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I"m not the same, the next question is, Who in the world am I? Ah, that"s the great puzzle!" And she began thinking over all the children she knew that were of the same age as herself,to see if she could have been changed for any of them. ‘I"m sure I"m not Ada," she said, ‘for her hair goes in such long ringlets, and mine doesn"t go in ringlets at all; and I"m sure I can"t be Mabel, for I know all sorts of things, and she, oh! she knows such a very little! Besides, she"s she, and I"m I, and—oh dear, how puzzling it all is! I"ll try if I know all the things I used to know. Let me see: four times five is twelve, and four times six is thirteen, and four times seven is—oh dear! I shall never get to twenty at that rate! However, the Multiplication Table doesn"t signify: let"s try Geography. London is the capital of Paris, and Paris is the capital of Rome, and Rome—no, that"s all wrong, I"m certain! I must have been changed for Mabel! [COMMENT 3] I"ll try and say “How doth the little—“" and she crossed her hands on her lap as if she were saying lessons, and began to repeat it, but her voice sounded hoarse and strange, and the words did not come the same as they used to do:—‘How doth the little crocodileImprove his shining tail, And pour the waters of the Nile On every golden scale! ‘How cheerfully he seems to grin, How neatly spread his claws, And welcome little fishes in With gently smiling jaws!" ‘I"m sure those are not the right words," said poor Alice, and her eyes filled with tears again as she went on, ‘I must be Mabel after all, and I shall have to go and live in that poky little house, and have next to no toys to play with, and oh! ever somany lessons to learn! No, I"ve made up my mind about it; if I"m Mabel, I"llstay down here! It"ll be no use their putting their heads down and saying “Come up again, dear!” I shall only look up and say “Who am I then? Tell me that first, and then, if I like being that person, I"ll come up: if not, I"ll stay downhere till I"m somebody else”—but, oh dear!" cried Alice, with a sudden burst of tears, ‘I do wish they would put their heads down! I am so very tired of being all alone here!"As she said this she looked down at her hands, and was surprised to see that she had put on one of the Rabbit"s little white kid gloves while she was talking. ‘How can I havedone that?" she thought. ‘I must be growing small again." She got up and went to the table to measure herself by it, and found that, as nearly as she could guess, she was now about two feet high, and was going on shrinking rapidly: she soon found out that the cause of this was the fan she was holding, and she dropped it hastily, just in time to avoid shrinking away altogether.‘That was a narrow escape!" said Alice, a good deal frightened at the sudden change, but very glad to find herself still in existence; ‘and now for the garden!" and she ran with all speed back to the little door: but, alas! the little door was shut again, and the little golden key was lying on the glass table as before, ‘and things are worse than ever," thought the poor child, ‘for I never was so small as this before, never! And I declare it"s too bad, that it is!"As she said these words her foot slipped, and in another moment, splash! she was up to her chin in salt water. Her first idea was that she had somehow fallen into the sea, ‘and in that case I can go back by railway," she said to herself. (Alice had been to the seaside once in her life, and had come to the general conclusion, that wherever you go to on the English coast you find a number of bathing machines in the sea, some children digging in the sand with wooden spades, then a row of lodging houses, and behind them a railway station.) However, she soon made out that she was in the pool of tears which she had wept when she was nine feet high. ‘I wish I hadn"t cried so much!" said Alice, as she swam about, trying to find her way out. ‘I shall be punished for it now, I suppose, by being drowned in my own tears! [COMMENT 4] That will be aqueer thing, to be sure! However, everything is queer to-day." Just then she heard something splashing about in the pool a little way off, and she swam nearer to make out what it was: at first she thought it must be a walrus orhippopotamus, but then she remembered how small she was now, and she soon made out that it was only a mouse that had slipped in like herself. ‘Would it be of any use, now," thought Alice, ‘to speak to this mouse? Everything is so out-of-the-way down here, that I should think very likely it can talk: at any rate, there"s no harm in trying. [COMMENT 5] So she began: ‘O Mouse, do you know the way out of this pool? I am very tired of swimming about here, O Mouse!" (Alice thought this must be the right way of speaking to amouse: she had never done such a thing before, but she remembered having seen in her brother"s Latin Grammar, ‘A mouse—of a mouse—to a mouse—a mouse—Omouse!") The Mouse looked at her rather inquisitively, and seemed to her to wink with one of its little eyes, but it said nothing.‘Perhaps it doesn"t understand English," thought Alice; ‘I dare say it"s a French mouse, come over with William the Conqueror." (For, with all her knowledge of history, Alice had no very clear notion how long ago anything had happened.) So she began again: ‘ Ou est ma chatte [COMMENT 6] ?" which was the first sentence in her French lesson-book. The Mouse gave a sudden leap out ofthe water, and seemed to quiver all over with fright. ‘Oh, I beg your pardon!"cried Alice hastily, afraid that she had hurt the poor animal"s feelings. ‘I quite forgot you didn"t like cats.""Not like cats!" Cried the Mouse, in a shrill, passionate voixe. "Would you like cats if you were me?" ‘Well, perhaps not," said Alice in a soothing tone: ‘don"t be angry about it. And yet I wish I could show you ourcat Dinah: I think you"d take a fancy to cats if you could only see her. She issuch a dear quiet thing," Alice went on, half to herself, as she swam lazily about in the pool, ‘and she sits purring so nicely by the fire, licking herpaws and washing her face—and she is such a nice soft thing to nurse—and she"s such a capital one for catching mice—oh, I beg your pardon!" cried Alice again, for this time the Mouse was bristling all over, and she felt certain it must bereally offended. ‘We won"t talk about her any more if you"d rather not." ‘We indeed!"cried the Mouse, who was trembling down to the end of his tail. ‘As if I would talk on such a subject! Our family always hated cats: nasty, low, vulgar things! Don"t let me hear the name again!" ‘I won"t indeed!" said Alice, in a great hurry to change the subject of conversation.‘Are you—are you fond—of—of dogs?" The Mouse did not answer, so Alice went oneagerly: ‘There is such a nice little dog near our house I should like to show you! A little bright-eyed terrier, you know, with oh, such long curly brown hair! And it"ll fetch things when you throw them, and it"ll sit up and beg forits dinner, and all sorts of things—I can"t remember half of them—and it belongs to a farmer, you know, and he says it"s so useful, it"s worth a hundred pounds! He says it kills all the rats and—oh dear!" cried Alice in a sorrowful tone, ‘I"m afraid I"ve offended it again!" For the Mouse was swimming away fromher as hard as it could go, and making quite a commotion in the pool as it went. So she called softly after it, ‘Mouse dear! Do come back again, and we won"t talk about catsor dogs either, if you don"t like them!" When the Mouse heard this, it turned round and swam slowly back to her: its face was quite pale (with passion, Alice thought), and it said in a low trembling voice, ‘Let us get to the shore, and then I"ll tell you my history, and you"ll understand why it is I hate cats and dogs." It was high time to go, for the pool was getting quite crowded with the birds and animals that had fallen into it: there were a Duck and a Dodo, a Lory and an Eaglet, and several other curious creatures. Alice led the way, and the whole party swam to the shore.

20170608-chapter 6-《pride and prejudice

Chapter 6 “This is quite shocking! He deserves to be publicly disgraced “Some time or other he will be—but it will not be by me. Until I can forget his father, I can never confront (面对) or expose him.” Elizabeth respected him for such feelings, and thought he was more noble than ever as he expressed them. The card game ended soon afterward. Mr. Collins had lost every hand , but he assured (确信) the table that it did not matter, because he was not concerned to have lost such a small amount of money. “Thankfully my position is so fortunate that money is of little importance. There are undoubtedly many who could not say the same, but thanks to Lady Catherine de Bourgh, I do not need to worry about such little matters.” This sentence caught Mr. Wickham"s attention, and after observing Mr. Collins for a few moments, he quietly asked Elizabeth what Mr. Collins"s relationship was to the Bourgh family. “Lady Catherine de Bourgh,” she replied, “has very recently given him a position in the church. I do not know how Mr. Collins was first introduced to her, but he certainly has not known her long.” “You know of course that Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Lady Anne Darcy were sisters. Therefore, she is aunt to the present Mr. Darcy. Her daughter, Miss de Bourgh, will inherit (继承) a very large fortune, and it is believed that she and Mr. Darcy will marry in order to combine their wealth.” This information made Elizabeth smile, as she thought of poor Miss Bingley. Her praise and affection for Mr. Darcy must all be in vain and useless, if it had already been promised that he would marry someone else. Elizabeth told Jane the next day about what she had heard from Mr. Wickham, while Jane listened with astonishment and concern. She could not believe that Mr. Darcy was so unworthy of Mr. Bingley"s respect, but she was not the type to distrust a young man of such a friendly appearance as Wickham. The two young ladies were called away by the arrival of the same people of whom they had been speaking. Mr. Bingley and his sisters came to give their personal invitation for the long-expected ball at Netherfield, which was to be held on the following Tuesday. The possibility of the Netherfield ball was an extremely pleasant idea for every female of the family. Mrs. Bennet chose to consider it as being given as an honor to her eldest daughter, and was particularly **flattered (奉承) by **receiving the invitation from Mr. Bingley himself, instead of just by means of a card. Jane imagined a happy evening in the company of her friends, and with Mr. Bingley. Elizabeth thought with pleasure about dancing a great deal with Mr. Wickham, and of seeing a confirmation of everything Wickham had said in Mr. Darcy"s look and behavior. Elizabeth"s was in such a good mood (好兴致) on this occasion, that though she usually tried to avoid speaking to Mr. Collins, she could not help but ask him whether he planned to attend (参加) the ball. She was rather surprised to find that he made no objection to the ball whatsoever, and that he was even planning to dance. “I have so few objections to dancing myself,” said he, “that I hope to dance with all my pretty cousins throughout the evening. I take this opportunity of asking you, Miss Elizabeth, for the two first dances especially.” Elizabeth felt herself completely surprised. She had planned on dancing with Mr. Wickham for those dances, and to have Mr. Collins instead! The idea now occurred to her for the first time, that she was being chosen from among her sisters as worthy of being Mr. Collins future wife. It was not long before her mother led her to understand that she very much approved of the possibility of their marriage. Elizabeth, however, chose not to take the hint (暗示) , being well aware that any reply would cause a serious argument. Mr. Collins might never propose marriage, and until he did, it was useless to argue about him. Until Elizabeth entered the drawing-room (客厅) at Netherfield, and looked** in vain** (徒劳的)for Mr. Wickham, she had never had any doubt of his being present. But in an instant (立刻) she felt the dreadful (令人不快的) suspicion that he had purposely not been invited, in order to please Mr. Darcy. The first two dances were humiliating to Elizabeth, as Mr. Collins was awkward and serious, and often moved the wrong way without being aware of it. He gave her all the shame and misery which a disagreeable partner can give in a couple of dances, and she was greatly relieved to finally escape from him. When those dances were over, she returned to Charlotte Lucas. The two girls were busy in conversation with one another, when Elizabeth was suddenly addressed by (与...说话)Mr. Darcy, who surprised her so much by asking her to dance the next dance with him, that she accepted him before she quite realized what she had done. Charlotte Lucas could see that Elizabeth was upset with herself, and tried to make her feel better: “I think you may well find him very agreeable.” “That would be the worst of all!” Elizabeth replied. To find a man agreeable whom one has decided to hate! Whatever you do, please do not wish for that!” When the dancing began again, and Darcy again approached to take her hand, they danced for some time without speaking a word. She began to imagine that their silence was to last through the two dances. At first she was determined not to break the silence, but it suddenly occurred to her that it would be a greater punishment to Mr. Darcy if she forced him to talk. She made a small comment about the dance, he replied, and then was again silent. After a few minutes pause, she spoke to him a second time:—“It is your turn to say something now, Mr. Darcy. I talked about the dance, and you ought to make some sort of comment on the size of the room, or the number of couples.” He smiled, and assured (确保) her that he would say whatever she wished him to say. “Very well. That reply will be suitable for the present. Perhaps I may now say that private balls are much pleasanter than public ones. But after that, we may be silent.” “Do you follow strict rules, then, when talking at dances?” “Sometimes. It would look odd (古怪的) to be completely silent for half an hour, and yet when some couples dance, the less said, the better.” “Do you believe we are such a couple, then?” asked Darcy. “::I believe so. Both of us are proud, withdrawn , and unsociable,:: ::and unwilling to speak unless we can be certain of amazing everyone in the room with our brilliance.::” Elizabeth replied. “That does not seem to me to be a very accurate description of your character.” said Darcy. “How good a description it may be of mine, it is not for me to say(没有权利说). You think it an accurate one, undoubtedly.” They were again silent, until he asked her if she and her sisters often walked to Meryton. She answered that they did. Unable to resist the temptation, she added, “When you met us there the other day, we had just been making a new acquaintance.”

chapter 16-《pride and prejudice

Chapter 16 Elizabeth awoke the next morning with the same thoughts as when she had closed her eyes the night before. She could not yet recover from the surprise of what had happened, and so she decided to take a walk soon after breakfast, for the sake of some fresh air and exercise. She was heading directly toward her favorite walking path, when she remembered that Mr. Darcy sometimes came there.Instead of entering the grounds of Rosings, she turned up the path which led farther from the main road. After walking two or three times along that part of the path, she was tempted to stop at the gates and look into the grounds, since it was such a pleasant morning. She was just about to continue with her walk, when she caught a glimpse of a gentleman in the small forest along the edge of the grounds. He was moving toward her, and since she feared it was Mr. Darcy, she turned to head back in the direction from which she had come. But the person who came toward her was now near enough to see her, and stepping forward with eagerness, he called her name. The voice **revealed (表明) it to be **Mr. Darcy, and she moved again toward the gate. He had by that time reached it also. Holding out a letter, he said, “I have been waiting for some time in the hope of meeting with you. Will you do me the honor of reading that letter?” She took the letter, and Mr. Darcy bowed slightly and turned away, and walked away quickly until he was soon out of sight. With the strongest curiosity, Elizabeth opened the letter. She found inside an envelope containing two sheets of letter-paper, covered completely in small handwriting. As she continued walking along the path, she then began to read it:— Do not be alarmed, madam, on receiving this letter. I will not repeat here those sentiments (感情) and offers from last night, which were so disgusting to you. I hope to avoid causing any more pain to you, or any further embarrassment to myself, and so I will not talk of that which is now in the past. Last night, you accused me of two very specific offenses. The first mentioned was, that I had a part in separating Mr. Bingley from your sister. The other was that I had ruined Mr. Wickham chances for security and prosperity (富贵) , despite his claims upon me and **in defiance (违抗) of **the claims of honor and humanity.Taking the first accusation first: upon seeing Bingley and your elder sister together,it was clear to me almost immediately that he liked her more than any other young woman there. It was not until the evening of the ball at Netherfield, however, that I began to fear his affection had become something more serious. At that ball, I saw for the first time that, due to the attention which Bingley paid to your sister, it had become generally expected that the two would soon be married. It was spoken of as if it were already certain to occur, and only the time of the wedding remained to be decided. I began from that moment to observe closely my friend"s behavior, and I realized that his feelings for Miss Bennet were the strongest I had ever seen in him. I also watched your sister. She seemed as open, cheerful, and engaging (迷人的) as ever, but did not show any signs of any deep affection. From my examination of her that evening, I decided that she merely enjoyed receiving his affection, but did not return any similar feelings of her own. It is possible that I have been mistaken here, and your understanding of your sister and her feelings must clearly be superior to my own. If I have made an error which has caused unnecessary pain to her, then I certainly deserve your resentment (怨恨) . But there was also a second objection to such a marriage. There was that total** lack of decency (体面) and civility(礼仪)** which was shown so frequently by your mother, by your younger sisters, and occasionally even by your father. I am sorry to offend you by speaking so frankly (直白地) .Perhaps it may give you some comfort, that no similar criticism (诟病) can be made of your elder sister"s behavior and yours. I will openly admit that I clearly pointed out to my friend the danger of choosing your sister.Bingley greatly trusts my judgment, more so than he does his own, but even so I do not think I could have prevented the marriage if it were not for my assurance (确信) of Jane"s indifference (冷淡) , which I did not hesitate to give him.It only took a few words to persuade him not to return to Netherfield, and I cannot blame myself for what I have said.My only regret at my actions is that I was dishonest in not allowing Bingley to know that your sister was in London. With respect to your other more serious accusation regarding Mr. Wickham, I have no choice but to explain the entire story of his connection with my family. Mr. Wickham is the son of a very respectable man, who had worked for my father for many years managing my family"s finances. My father, therefore, chose to support the younger Mr. Wickham at school, and then at Cambridge. My father was not only fond of this young man"s company, but also had a very high opinion of him. He hoped the church would be his profession, and intended to help establish him in it. As for myself, it has been many, many years since I first began to think of Mr. Wickham in a very different way. He was always careful to never reveal (揭露) himself to my father, but since I was a young man of nearly the same age as him I could not help but see who he truly was. I had the opportunity to see him in his unguarded moments, which my father could not have.

There was only one student in the room, who was bending over(俯身,弯腰) a table, intensely focused on his work. At the sound of our steps, he glanced round and sprang to his feet with a cry of pleasure. “I"ve found it! I"ve found it,” he shouted to my companion, running towards us with a test-tube(试管) in his hand. “I have found a reagent(试剂) which is precipitated(被沉淀) by hemoglobin(血红素,血红蛋白), and by nothing else.” He could not have been more delighted if he had discovered a gold mine. “Dr. Watson, Mr. Sherlock Holmes,” said Stamford, introducing us. “How are you?” he said kindly, shaking my hand with unbelievable strength. “You have been in Afghanistan, I observe.” “这是Dr. Watson(华生),这是Mr. Sherlock Holmes(福尔摩斯·夏洛克)。” Stamford(斯坦福德)介绍我们。 “哦,我看出来你去过Afghanistan(阿富汗)。 “How on earth did you know that?” I asked in shock. “Never mind,” he said, laughing to himself. “The question now is about hemoglobin(血红素,血红蛋白). No doubt you see the significance(意义) of this discovery of mine?” “It is interesting, chemically, no doubt,” I answered, “but practically—” “Well, man, it is the most practical medico-legal(法医学的) discovery for years. Don"t you see that it gives us an infallible(万无一失的) test for blood stains(血迹). Come over here now!” He seized me by the coat-sleeve in his eagerness, and drew me over to the table at which he had been working. “Let us have some fresh blood,” he said, sticking a long needle into his finger. “Now, I add this small quantity of blood to a litre of water. You can see that the resulting mixture looks like pure water. The proportion(比例) of blood cannot be more than one in a million. But look now!” As he spoke, he threw into the water a few white crystals(晶体), and then added some drops of a transparent(透明的) liquid. In an instant the contents turned a reddish-brown color, and a brownish dust was precipitated(沉淀) to the bottom of the glass jar. “Ha! ha!” he cried, clapping his hands, and looking as delighted as a child with a new toy. “What do you think of that?” “It seems to be a very sensitive(灵敏的) test,” I remarked. “Beautiful! Beautiful! The old guaiacum test was very clumsy(笨拙的) and uncertain. So is the microscopic(显微镜) examination for blood cells(细胞). The latter is also useless if the stains(污渍) are even a few hours old. Now, this appears to act as well whether the blood is old or new. If this test had been invented, there are hundreds of men now walking the earth who would long ago have paid the penalty(处罚) of their crimes.” “Indeed!” I murmured(低声道). “Criminal cases often depend upon(取决于) that one point. A man is suspected(被怀疑) of a crime months perhaps after it has been committed. His clothes are examined, and brownish stains(污渍) discovered upon them. Are they blood stains(血渍), or mud stains(泥渍), or rust stains(锈渍), or fruit stains(果渍), or what are they? That is a question which has puzzled(困扰) many an(许多) expert, and why? Because there was no reliable(可靠的) test. Now we have the Sherlock Holmes" test, and there will no longer be any difficulty.” His eyes fairly glittered(闪光) as he spoke, and he put his hand over his heart and bowed as if to some applauding(鼓掌的) crowd created by his imagination. “You are to be congratulated,” I remarked, considerably surprised at his enthusiasm. “There was the case of Von Bischoff at Frankfort last year. He would certainly have been hung if this test had been in existence. Then there was Mason of Bradford, and the notorious(臭名昭著的) Muller, and Lefevre of Montpellier, and Samson of New Orleans. I could name twenty cases, or more, in which this test would have decided the result.” 还有Bradford的 Mason,臭名昭著的Muller,Montpellier的Lefevre,New Orleans的Samson。 “You seem to be a walking calendar of crime,” said Stamford with a laugh. “You might start a paper on those lines. Call it the ‘Police News of the Past." ” “It might make very interesting reading, too,” remarked Sherlock Holmes, sticking a small bandage over the place where his finger was bleeding. “I have to be careful,” he continued, turning to me with a smile, “for I experiment with poisons a good deal.” He held out his hand as he spoke, and I noticed that it was covered with similar bandages. “We came here on business,” said Stamford, turning to Sherlock Holmes. “My friend here is looking for somewhere to live, and as you were complaining(抱怨) that you could get no one to share rooms with you, I thought that I had better bring you together.” Sherlock Holmes seemed delighted at the idea of sharing his rooms with me. “I have my eye on an apartment(公寓) in Baker Street,” he said, “which would suit us perfectly. You don"t mind the smell of strong tobacco, I hope?” “I"m a pipe smoker myself,” I answered. “That"s good enough. I generally have chemicals everywhere, and occasionally do experiments. Would that bother(打扰) you?” “Not at all.” “Let me see—what my other faults are. I get very withdrawn(沉默寡言的) at times, and don"t open my mouth for days. You must not think I am angry at you when I do that. Just leave me alone, and I"ll soon be all right. What have you to confess(坦白) now? It"s just as well for two people to know the worst of one another before they begin to live together.” I laughed at this cross-examination(盘问). “I keep a small dog,” I said, “and I object to noise because my nerves(神经) are shaken, and I get up at all sorts of strange hours, and I am extremely lazy. I have another set of faults when I"m well, but those are the main ones at present.” “Do you include violin-playing in your category(范畴) of noise?” he asked, anxiously. “It depends on(取决于) the player,” I answered. “A well-played violin is a treat for the gods—a badly-played one—” “Oh, that"s all right,” he cried, with a happy laugh. “I think we may consider the thing as settled—that is, if the rooms are acceptable to you.” “When shall we see them?” “Call for me here at noon tomorrow, and we"ll go together and settle everything,” he answered. “All right—noon exactly,” said I, shaking his hand. We left him working among his chemicals, and we walked together towards my hotel. “By the way,” I asked suddenly, stopping and turning upon Stamford, “how did he know that I had come from Afghanistan?” My companion smiled. “That"s just his special little talent,” he said. “Many people have wanted to know how he finds things out.” “Oh! A mystery(谜) is it?” I cried, rubbing(搓着) my hands. “This is very interesting. I am very grateful to you for bringing us together. Good-bye.” I said, and walked into my hotel, considerably interested in my new acquaintance(相识之人). over。

The Old Man And The Sea Chapter05

He always thought of the sea as la mar which is what people call her in Spanish (西班牙语) when they love her. Sometimes those who love her say bad things of her but they are always said as though she were a woman. Some of the younger fishermen, those who used buoys (浮标) as floats for their lines and had motorboats (摩托艇;汽船), bought when the shark livers (肝脏) had brought much money, spoke of her as el mar which is masculine (男子气概的). They spoke of her as a contestant (竞争者) or a place or even an enemy. But the old man always thought of her as feminine (女性) and as something that gave or withheld (保留) great favours, and if she did wild or wicked (坏的) things it was because she could not help them. The moon affects her as it does a woman, he thought. He was rowing steadily (稳定地) and it was no effort for him since he kept well within his speed and the surface of the ocean was flat except for the occasional (偶尔的) swirls (漩涡) of the current. He was letting the current do a third of the work and as it started to be light he saw he was already further out than he had hoped to be at this hour. I worked the deep wells for a week and did nothing, he thought. Today I"ll work out where the schools of bonito and albacore are and maybe there will be a big one with them. Before it was really light he had his baits out and was drifting (漂) with the current. One bait was down forty fathoms The second was at seventy-five and the third and fourth were down in the blue water at one hundred and one hundred and twenty-five fathoms. Each bait hung (悬挂;吊着) head down with the shank (杆;柄) of the hook inside the bait fish, tied and sewed solid and all the projecting (投掷) part of the hook, the curve (转弯) and the point, was covered with fresh sardines (沙丁鱼). Each sardine was hooked through both eyes so that they made a half-garland (半圆形) on the projecting steel (钢). There was no part of the hook that a great fish could feel which was not sweet smelling and good tasting. The boy had given him two fresh small tunas (鲔鱼), or albacores, which hung on the two deepest lines like plummets (铅锤;坠子) and, on the others, he had a big blue runner and a yellow jack that had been used before; but they were in good condition still and had the excellent sardines to give them scent (香味) and attractiveness (吸引力). Each line, as thick around as a big pencil, was looped onto a green-sapped stick (棍;杆) so that any pull or touch on the bait would make the stick dip and each line had two forty-fathom coils (卷;圈) which could be made fast to the other spare coils so that, if it were necessary, a fish could take out over three hundred fathoms of line. Now the man watched the dip of the three sticks over the side of the skiff and rowed gently to keep the lines straight up and down and at their proper depths. It was quite light and any moment now the sun would rise. The sun rose thinly (薄薄地) from the sea and the old man could see the other boats, low on the water and well in toward the shore, spread out across the current. Then the sun was brighter and the glare came on the water and then, as it rose clear, the flat sea sent it back at his eyes so that it hurt sharply and he rowed without looking into it. He looked down into the water and watched the lines that went straight down into the dark of the water. He kept them straighter than anyone did, so that at each level in the darkness of the stream there would be a bait waiting exactly where he wished it to be for any fish that swam there. Others let them drift with the current and sometimes they were at sixty fathoms when the fishermen thought they were at a hundred. But, he thought, I keep them with precision (准确). Only I have no luck any more. But who knows? Maybe today. Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready. The sun was two hours higher now and it did not hurt his eyes so much to look into the east. There were only three boats in sight (视野) now and they showed very low and far inshore. All my life the early sun has hurt my eyes, he thought. Yet they are still good. In the evening I can look straight into it without getting the blackness. It has more force in the evening too. But in the morning, it is painful. Just then he saw a man-of-war bird (军舰鸟) with his long black wings circling in the sky ahead of him. He made a quick drop, slanting (倾斜) down on his back-swept wings, and then circled again. “He"s got something,” the old man said aloud. “He"s not just looking.” He rowed slowly and steadily toward where the bird was circling. He did not hurry and he kept his lines straight up and down. But he crowded the current a little so that he was still fishing correctly though faster than he would have fished if he was not trying to use the bird. The bird went higher in the air and circled again, his wings motionless (静止). Then he dove suddenly and the old man saw flying fish spurt out of the water and sail desperately over the surface. “Dolphin,” the old man said aloud. “Big dolphin.” He shipped his oars (桨) and brought a small line from under the bow. It had a wire leader and a medium-sized hook and he baited it with one of the sardines. He let it go over the side and then made it fast to a ring bolt (螺栓) in the stern (船尾). Then he baited another line and left it coiled in the shade of the bow. He went back to rowing and to watching the long-winged black bird who was working, now, low over the water.

The Old Man And The Sea Chapter21

It was too good to last, he thought. I wish it had been a dream now and that I had never hooked the fish and was alone in bed on the newspapers.“But man is not made for defeat,” he said. “A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” I am sorry that I killed the fish though, he thought. Now the bad time is coming and I do not even have the harpoon. The dentuso is cruel and able and strong and intelligent. But I was more intelligent than he was. Perhaps not, he thought. Perhaps I was only better armed. “Don"t think, old man,” he said aloud. “Sail on this course and take it when it comes. But I must think, he thought. Because it is all I have left. That and baseball. I wonder how the great DiMaggio would have liked the way I hit him in the brain? It was no great thing, he thought. Any man could do it. But do you think my hands were as great a handicap as the bone spurs? I cannot know. I never had anything wrong with my heel except the time the sting ray stung it when I stepped on him when swimming and paralyzed the lower leg and made the unbearable pain. “Think about something cheerful, old man,” he said. “Every minute now you are closer to home. You sail lighter for the loss of forty pounds.” He knew quite well the pattern of what could happen when he reached the inner part of the current. But there was nothing to be done now. “Yes there is,” he said aloud. “I can lash my knife to the butt of one of the oars.” So he did that with the tiller under his arm and the sheet of the sail under his foot. “Now,” he said. “I am still an old man. But I am not unarmed.” The breeze was fresh now and he sailed on well. He watched only the forward part of the fish and some of his hope returned. It is silly not to hope, he thought. Besides I believe it is a sin. Do not think about sin, he thought. There are enough problems now without sin. Also I have no understanding of it. I have no understanding of it and I am not sure that I believe in it. Perhaps it was a sin to kill the fish. I suppose it was even though I did it to keep me alive and feed many people. But then everything is a sin. Do not think about sin. It is much too late for that and there are people who are paid to do it. Let them think about it. You were born to be a fisherman as the fish was born to be a fish. San Pedro was a fisherman as was the father of the great DiMaggio. But he liked to think about all things that he was involved in and since there was nothing to read and he did not have a radio, he thought much and he kept on thinking about sin. You did not kill the fish only to keep alive and to sell for food, he thought. You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman. You loved him when he was alive and you loved him after. If you love him, it is not a sin to kill him. Or is it more? “You think too much, old man,” he said aloud. But you enjoyed killing the dentuso, he thought. He lives on the live fish as you do. He is not a scavenger nor just a moving appetite(胃口,此处引申为大胃王鲨鱼)as some sharks are. He is beautiful and noble and knows no fear of anything. “I killed him in self-defense,” the old man said aloud. “And I killed him well.” Besides, he thought, everything kills everything else in some way. Fishing kills me exactly as it keeps me alive. The boy keeps me alive, he thought. I must not deceive myself too much. He leaned over the side and pulled loose a piece of the meat of the fish where the shark had cut him. He chewed it and noted its quality and its good taste. It was firm and juicy, like meat, but it was not red. There was no stringiness in it and he knew that it would bring the highest price In the market. But there was no way to keep its scent out of the water and the old man knew that a very bad time was coming. The breeze was steady. It had backed a little further into the north-east and he knew that meant that it would not fall off. The old man looked ahead of him but he could see no sails nor could he see the hull nor the smoke of any ship. There were only the flying fish that went up from his bow sailing away to either side and the yellow patches of Gulf weed. He could not even see a bird. He had sailed for two hours, resting in the stern and sometimes chewing a bit of the meat from the marlin, trying to rest and to be strong, when he saw the first of the two sharks. “Ay,” he said aloud. There is no translation for this word and perhaps it is just a noise such as a man might make, involuntarily, feeling the nail go through his hands and into the wood. “Galanos,” he said aloud. He had seen the second fin now coming up behind the first and had identified them as shovel-nosed sharks by the brown, triangular fin and the sweeping movements of the tail. They had the scent and were excited and in the stupidity of their great hunger they were losing and finding the scent in their excitement. But they were closing all the time.

Drebber and Stangerson called on Ferrier, who told them that his daughter would never marry either of them. The next day, he found painted on a door on his farm the number ‘28"—the number of days that he had left to decide whom his daughter should marry. Each night a new and smaller number was painted somewhere on his farm. Ferrier was powerless, and could see no way of avoiding the blow that was coming to himself and his daughter. One night after the number ‘2" had been painted on his house, Ferrier heard someone tapping very gently upon the door. Was it some midnight killer? John Ferrier felt that instant death would be better than the doubt. Springing forward, he threw the door open. It was Jefferson Hope. Jefferson Hope。 “Good God!” cried John Ferrier. “How you scared(吓到) me!” “Give me food,” Jefferson said. “I have had no time for food for forty-eight hours.” He threw himself upon the cold meat and bread which were still lying upon the table from his host"s supper, and ate it quickly. “Is Lucy well?” he asked, when he had satisfied his hunger. “Yes. She does not know the danger,” her father answered. “That is well. The house is watched on every side. They may be sharp(机警的), but they"re not quite sharp(机警的) enough to catch a hunter such as I.” “娘咧!”John Ferrier低喊了一声,“你吓死我了!” John Ferrier felt a different man now that he realized that he had help. He grabbed(抓住) the young man"s hand and shook it warmly. “You"re a man to be proud of,” he said. “What are we to do?” “Tomorrow is your last day, and unless you act tonight you are lost. I have three horses waiting in the Eagle Ravine. We must head for Carson City through the mountains. You had better wake Lucy. It is just as well that the servants do not sleep in the house.” 我在 Eagle Ravine(鹰谷)有三匹马。 The welcoming between the lovers was warm, but brief, for minutes were precious(宝贵的), and there was much to be done. Opening the window very slowly and carefully, they waited until a dark cloud had somewhat obscured(模糊) the night, and then one by one passed through into the little garden. Once on the high road they made rapid progress. About the middle of the second day of their flight their food began to run out. This gave Jefferson a little uneasiness(担忧). Choosing a sheltered(可藏身的) corner, he stacked(堆) together a few dried branches and made a fire, at which his companions might warm themselves. And he set out in search of food. He walked for a couple of miles without any luck. At last, after two or three hours of searching, he managed to find and shoot a big-horn(角) antelope(羚羊). The creature was too large to lift, so Jefferson cut away one thigh(大腿) and part of the side. With this food over his shoulder, he hurried to return to the others, for it was already getting dark. When he turned the corner, he saw the spot where the fire had been. There was still a glowing(发光) pile of wood ashes there, but it had evidently not been touched since his departure(离开). There was no living creature near the fire: animals, man, girl, all were gone. It was only too clear that some sudden and terrible disaster had occurred during his absence. Then his eye fell upon an object which made his blood run cold. It was a newly-dug grave(坟墓) with a cross over it. The writing on the cross was brief, but to the point: JOHN FERRIER, FORMERLY OF SALT LAKE CITY, Died August 4th, 1860. Jefferson Hope looked wildly round to see if there was a second grave(坟墓), but there was no sign of one. Lucy had been carried back by the Mormons to accomplish(履行) her original destiny(命运) as a wife of a member of the Church. As the young fellow realized the certainty of her fate(命运), and his own inability to prevent it, he wished that he, too, was lying with the old farmer. However, his active spirit shook off the lethargy(倦怠) which sprang from despair(绝望). If there was nothing else left to him, he could at least devote his life to revenge(复仇). He heard from a Mormon acquaintance(熟人) that Lucy was now married to Drebber, but that she was so sick that no one expected her to survive. She died within a month. Jefferson was just in time to attend(参加) the funeral preparations, and to take the wedding(结婚) ring so that she would not be buried with it. Drebber and Stangerson had left Utah, and no one knew where they had gone. With the small amount of money he had, plus whatever he could earn along the way, Jefferson Hope travelled from town to town in search of his enemies. Year passed into year, his black hair turned grey and his health failed, but still he searched on, a human bloodhound(猎犬), with his mind wholly set upon the one object of revenge(复仇) to which he had devoted his life. He almost caught up with Drebber in Cleveland, Ohio, but Drebber and Stangerson (who had become Drebber"s private secretary) had him arrested(逮捕). 在Ohio(俄亥俄州)的Cleveland(克利夫兰),他差点就抓到了Drebber。 By the time Jefferson Hope was free, his enemies had left for Europe. Jefferson followed them there, and tracked his enemies from city to city. When he reached St. Petersburg, they had left for Paris; and when he followed them there, he learned that they had just set off for Copenhagen(哥本哈根). At the Danish(丹麦的) capital he was again a few days late, for they had left for London, where he found them at last. over。

[A COURSE IN MIRACLE] Chapter 1 The Meaning of Miracles

I. Principles of Miracles There is no order of difficulty in miracles. One is not "harder" or "bigger" than another. They are all the same. All expressions of love are maximal. 【T-1.I.1】 Miracles as such do not matter. The only thing that matters is their Source, which is far beyond evaluation. 【T-1.I.2】 Miracles occur naturally as expressions of love. The real miracle is the love that inspires them. In this sense everything that comes from love is a miracle. 【T-1.I.3】 All miracles mean life, and God is the Giver of life. His Voice will direct you every specifically. You will be told all you need to know. 【T-1.I.4】 Miracles are habits, and should be involuntary. They should not be under conscious control. Consciously selected miracles can be misguided. 【T-1.I.5】 Miracles are natural. When they do not occur something has gone wrong. 【T-1.I.6】 Miracles are everyone"s right, but purification is necessary first. 【T-1.I.7】 Miracles are healing because they supply a lack; they are performed by those who temporarily have more for those who temporarily have less. 【T-1.I.8】 Miracles are a kind of exchange. Like all expressions of love, which are always miraculous in the true sense, the exchange reverses the physical laws. They bring more love both to the giver and the receiver. 【T-1.I.9】 The use of miracles as spectacles to induce belief is a misunderstanding of their purpose. 【T-1.I.10】 Prayer is the medium of miracles. It is a means of communication of the created with the Creator. Through prayer love is received, and through miracles love is expressed. 【T-1.I.11】 Miracles are thought. Thoughts can represent the lower or bodily level of experience, or the higher or spiritual level of experience. One makes the physical, and the other creates the spiritual. 【T-1.I.12】 Miracles are both beginnings and endings, and so they alter the temporal order. They are always affirmations of rebirth, which seem to go back but really go forward. They undo the past in the present, and thus release the future. 【T-1.I.13】 Miracles bear witness to truth. They are convincing because they arise from conviction. Without conviction they deteriorate into magic, which is mindless and therefore destructive; or rather, the uncreative use of mind. 【T-1.I.14】 Each day should be devoted to miracles. The purpose of time is to enable you to learn how to use time constructively. It is thus a teaching device and a means to an end. Time will cease when it is no longer useful in facilitating learning.【T-1.I.15】 Miracles are teaching devices for demonstrating it is as blessed to give as to receive. They simultaneously increase the strength of the giver and supply strength to the receiver. 【T-1.I.16】 Miracles transcend the body. They are sudden shifts into invisibility, away from the bodily level. That is why they heal. 【T-1.I.17】 A miracle is a service. It is the maximal service you can render to another. It is a way of loving your neighbor as yourself. You recognize your own and your neighbor"s worth simultaneously. 【T-1.I.18】 Miracles make minds one in God. They depend on cooperation because the Sonship is the sum of all that God created. Miracles therefore reflect the laws of eternity, not of time. 【T-1.I.19】 Miracles reawaken the awareness that the spirit, not the body, is the alter of truth. This is the recognition that leads to the healing power of the miracle. 【T-1.I.20】 Miracles are natural signs of forgiveness. Through miracles you accept God"s forgiveness by extending it to others. 【T-1.I.21】 Miracles are associated with fear only because of the belief that darkness can hide. You believe that what your physical eyes cannot see does not exist. This leads to a denial of spiritual sight. 【T-1.I.22】 Miracles rearrange perception and place all levels in true perspective. This is healing because sickness comes from confusing the levels.【T-1.I.23】 Miracles enable you to heal the sick and raise the dead because you made sickness and death yourself, and can therefore abolish both. You are a miracle, capable of creating in the likeness of your Creator. Everything else is your own nightmare, and does not exist. Only the creations of light are real. 【T-1.I.24】 Miracles are part of an interlocking chain of forgiveness which, when completed, is the Atonement. Atonement works all the time and in all the dimensions of time. 【T-1.I.25】

—TBC—

Chapter1.

CHAPTER 1:The Cyclone
