母狼的传说 古罗马是继古希腊之后西方世界的又一伟大帝国，它的强大和繁荣在古代世界首屈一指，被称为"世界帝国之都"，至今在罗马城依然保留下来了元老院、凯旋门、万神殿、纪功柱、大斗技场等闻名世界的建筑奇迹，向人们展现着古罗马的帝国的灿烂和辉煌。在罗马的城市建筑和雕塑中，人们经常可以看到母狼的形象，罗马人视母狼为母亲，认为古罗马是狼的后代，实际上这与一段关于古罗马起源的传说有关。 传说古代特洛伊王国被古希腊联军打败后，王子埃涅阿斯带领残部逃到台伯河流域，被拉丁姆地区的亚儿巴·龙加城的国王招为女婿，后来由他做了该城的国王，并代代相传。当王位传到努米托雷王时，努米托雷的弟弟阿穆利奥使用阴谋篡夺了王位，把努米雷托王流放异地，并把他的儿子们统统杀死，又把努米雷托王的女儿希尔维亚送到贞女塔做女祭司，要求她终身保持童贞，不得婚配，后来还是不放心，又把她囚禁于孤塔之中，不与她与外人接近，以防止希尔维亚与别人私通产下子嗣，以致努米雷托的后代找他报仇。 然而事与愿违，阿穆利奥的计谋没有得逞。囚禁于孤塔中的希尔维亚得到了战神马尔斯的垂青，战神来到塔中与希尔维亚约会，二人相爱并生下了一对双胞胎。阿穆利奥得知后非常愤怒，下令杀死了希尔维亚，并把她的两个儿子放在竹篮里扔进台伯河中，结果天意如此，这对孪生兄弟在河中顺流而下的时候被一只饮水的母狼救起，母狼把这对兄弟当作自己的孩子，用奶汁把喂养他们。几年以后，一位猎人发现了这两个孩子，便把他们收养起来，并给他们取名，哥哥叫罗慕洛斯，弟弟叫雷慕斯，并慢慢把他们养大成人。兄弟俩长大后返回城邦，杀死了阿穆利奥，报了杀母之仇，并让努米托雷王重登王位。 报仇雪恨之后，罗慕洛斯兄不愿再继续呆在亚儿巴·龙加城，他们来到台伯河边母狼喂养他们的地方建立了一座新城，并以哥哥的名字命名为"罗慕洛斯"，后来慢慢转音成了"罗马"，这就是罗马城的由来，因此罗马人视母狼为救星，自认为是母狼的后代。罗马人也继承了这种神性传统，英勇好战，所向无敌，在随后的几个世纪里征服了迦太基、希腊、埃及等地，形成了一个庞大的帝国，并诞生了恺撒大帝、奥古斯都大帝等雄视千古的帝王。 母狼传说带有浓重的神话色彩，其真实性历来为人们所怀疑。事实上，考古发现意大利半岛上早在在旧石器时代就已经有人类居住，到了新石器时代，翁布里亚人从非洲经过西班牙，法国来到意大利。公元前2000年左右的青铜时代，一些讲印欧语的部落从多瑙河和喀尔巴阡山越过阿尔卑斯山进入意大利，其中一支拉丁人进入拉提乌姆平原，约于前800年迁移至后来罗马城所在地，居于帕拉提乌姆等山丘。这时在意大利半岛上就存在着许多由萨宾人、拉丁人、翁布里亚人等组成的部落，他们所到一处就驱逐当地土著居民，建立部落，发展农业生产，逐步繁衍生息。 公元前8世纪，埃特鲁斯坎人从安纳托利亚来到意大利半岛，埃特鲁斯坎人不属于"古意大利人"，但他们农耕技术比较发达，喜欢经营商业和从事手工业，同时拥有组织严密的军队，他们通过议会和选举出的官员施行统治，在经济和政治上都比较成熟，托斯卡纳和北部的拉丁姆地区是埃特鲁斯坎人最早的定居地，埃特鲁斯坎人的到来为古罗马的形成提供了重要的基础。埃特鲁斯坎人在发展商贸和航运的过程中与希腊了产生了较大的接触，逐步吸收了先进的希腊文化，他们根据希腊文字创造了字母，形成了自己的雕塑及绘画风格，发展了以希腊神话为基础的宗教信仰。 与此同时，一小部分拉丁人在意大利半岛的南端生息繁衍，建立了最初的罗马城，这时候的罗马城还处于非常落后的时期，他们从埃特鲁斯坎人那里学习到农耕、商贸、文字、宗教等方面的许多知识。公元前7世纪，拉提姆平原上出现了部落联合的过程，罗马城逐渐由单一的拉丁人部落联合成包括萨宾人和埃特鲁斯坎人的罗马人公社，各部落之间进一步融合沟通，促进了罗马城的快速发展。 一般认为，传奇英雄罗慕洛斯在公元前753年建立了罗马城，并自封为第一位国王，古罗马从此进入王政时期。这一时期的罗马城氏族部落还完整的存在着，统治阶层包括王、元老院、库里亚会议，随着时间推移逐渐出现了贵族与平民的划分。其后古罗马先后进入共和时期和帝国时期，通过不断的征战和发展，一跃由一个小部落城邦发展成地跨欧亚非三大洲的庞大帝国，对后世文化和政治格局的发展产生了不可或缺的影响。
