Study and activities; how do you manage?When you studying in college, do you find yourself struggling with your schedule? The contextual study is often something that causes confusion among our students. In fact, it"s quite a simple concept that will give you a valuable opportunity to discuss the work you"ve presented, and which will demonstrate your skills as a self-reflexive writer. Basically, it enables you to put your work in context, so that as assessors, we can see that you"re aware of what you"re doing when you"re writing, that you are able to be a self-critic in a productive way. Things you might want to include when you"re writing a contextual study will obviously vary from piece to piece, and as you go through the course, it will naturally become more advanced in style, etc as you become more confident in your writing. The most important questions you"ll probably find yourself asking are ‘how" – as in ‘how did I do this?" And ‘why" – as in ‘why did I choose to do it this way?" However, specific elements will probably include: Fiction: You might want to talk about your decisions regarding: Style of narrative and why you chose that style. Character creation. Choice of viewpoint/tense – why for example, did you choose first person POV over third, or present tense over past? Plot structure, if any; and if not why not? Use of figurative language – e.g. metaphor, motif, symbol, etc. Use of imagery – how has imagery shaped your piece? Have you used any kind of experimental/innovative styles of writing? If so, discuss the piece"s structure, language – whatever it is you"ve done that makes your piece ‘different". What precursors are there to the piece you"ve written, e.g., what were your influences, if any? Are you trying to copy another writer"s style, for example, as an experiment? Showing this kind of self-reflexivity shows us that you"re aware, and we can consider the piece accordingly. What we DO NOT want to see is a re-telling of your piece. We have already seen what you"ve submitted; re-telling achieves nothing.

Budget: Restructure economy, reduce reliance on foreign workforcePosted: 17 February 2012 1614 hrsPhotos 1 of 1 Singapore workersSINGAPORE: Budget 2012 will prioritise to restructure Singapore"s economy so that incomes can grow steadily.It also aims to build an inclusive society by generating resources to help all Singaporeans get a fair share of the economic pie.This year"s budget also provides significant support to older Singaporeans, those with disabilities and lower-income citizens.Mr Tharman said the first major priority of this budget is restructuring the economy on the basis of skills, innovation and productivity.He said the government will now have to look further to reduce reliance on the foreign workforce.This is by lowering the limit of foreign workers in which firms in the manufacturing and service sectors can hire through a calibrated reduction in the Dependency Ratio Ceilings (DRCs), which specify the maximum proportion of foreign workers a company can hire.From July 2012, the DRC for manufacturing companies will be lowered from 65 per cent to 60 per cent. Firms in the service industry will see DRC reduced from 50 per cent to 45 per cent.An estimated 500 manufacturing companies and 8,500 service companies should be affected by the DRC changes.Mr Tharman noted that a slow growth year ahead is a good chance to lower "DRCs across the board in both manufacturing and services. Support is an interesting beast. I"d like to think that if I"m helping someone, I"m doing so without the expectation that they would one day do for me a particular service. But to be honest, when I would like a little help and it doesn"t come from the people who I"ve helped, people who I"d like to believe would want to help me without me even having to ask. It"s a pretty rotten feeling, a feeling I wonder why I have.If I am truly to say I have no expectations of return, then surely, when no return comes I shouldn"t be affected by it at all, right?I suppose, it"s always that much more real when it actually happens. And in truth pure altruism is rare, if it exists in humans at all.I"ve seen memes going around on social network outlets that have statements along the lines of “Don"t help those, who don"t help you” this on the surface makes sense, but is in direct contradiction to the selfless, community aware persons we are supposed to be. However to be altruistic means self sacrifice, as one would always prioritise the needs of others over their own, even at their own expense.So which one, does one choose?Do I seek altruism, even to the detriment of my own progress?Or do I refuse to help/support anyone unless clear understanding of a return of favour is established?I do believe balance is key to everything (or at least most things), finding that balance however perhaps isn"t as easy as one might like, it"s a continual learning experienceI certainly cannot claim to be selfless, although I don"t necessarily expect a return of favour, it would be nice if that happened.
