STS三款车上，正因为它是V8引擎，通用家族除了凯迪拉克这个豪华品牌外，其他的车型都比较少能享用这款引擎，于是凯迪拉克和北极星引擎无形中就挂上号了，说到凯迪拉克，人们往往就联想到北极星引擎。 当时这款北极星V8的代号为L37，排量为4.6升。 通用例来并不是生产高素质引擎的好手，而而北极星的诞生，却对通用来说具有划时代的意义。 不要以为这么说是在夸大一款引擎的作用，事实上在80年代到90年代初期，汽车产品并不像今天这样——同级车技术基本没有太大差异，拼的都是品牌文化和车型配置而已——当时一款车称之为好与坏的标准，往往就是由引擎、底盘和变速器等核心技术决定。遗憾的是现在很多中国人买车看的不是这个了。 因此当第一款北极星以295匹马力出现时，它是美国首款顶置凸轮轴的V8铝合金引擎，征服了不少美国人，，还获得了美国Ward"s Auto World评出的“美国10大引擎”的美誉。事实上能登上Ward引擎排行榜10大的货色，都是行内一等一的，这个相信大家也知道。 比如说日产的VQ系列就曾10年都获得Ward的10大引擎称号，强吧，呵呵。 当时的北极星凭借自己出色的升功率、优异的油耗表现和可靠的性能在美国市场上令奔驰和宝马的同排量引擎都相形见拙，大大长了美国人的威风。 正因为此，从文化层面和精神层面上，北极星和美国的野马、考维特等跑车一样，都成为了一种美国汽车工业的旗帜性产品，不过它的历史还并不是很长。 通用自然不会让这款引擎昙花一现，于是北极星V8踏上了不断完善和发展的道路。 1994年，第一款L37北极星V8引擎迎来了自己的第二个版本，LD8。LD8的凸轮形状经过重新打造，将马力降低了一点，只有270匹，不过却提升了低转速的扭矩，引擎对于油门的反应明显加强了，带来更理想的加速感受。
