The harsh realities of the frontier also shaped this tradition of hospitality.Someone traveling alone, if hungry, injured, or ill, often had nowhere to turn except to the nearest cabin or settlement. It was not a matter of choice for the traveler or merely a charitable impulse on the part of the settlers. It reflected the harshness of daily life: if you didn"t take in the stranger and take care of him, there was no one else who would. And someday, remember, you might be in the same situation. 通过段落背景理解,详细分析:“It was not a matter of choice for the traveler or merely a charitable impulse on the part of the settlers.”可以理解为:“it was not a matter of choice for the traveler”or“it was not merely a charitable impulse on the part of the settlers”两句话的合并,原句在 "or"的后面,省略了“it was not".这样我们只分析后一句即可: it was not merely a charitable impulse “主系表”结构, on the part of the settlers 我个人理解,与你相同,是状语,意思是:"对当地的助人者来讲,"it was not merely a charitable impulse on the part of the settlers 修饰的关系为:-------"对当地的助人者来讲,"( on the part of the settlers),状语部分------“这种帮助行为,决不仅仅是 ”(it was not merely),主、谓语部分------“行善思想的冲动 ”(a charitable impulse)宾语部分。

每逢11月第四个星期四,美国人民便迎来了自己最重要的传统民俗节日——感恩节。这个节日始于1621年。那年秋天,远涉重洋来到美洲的英国移民,为了感谢上帝赐予的丰收,举行了3天的狂欢活动。从此,这一习俗就沿续下来,并逐渐风行各地。1863年,美国总统林肯正式宣布感恩节为国定假日。届时,家家团聚,举国同庆,其盛大、热烈的情形,不亚于中国人过春节。   感恩节的起源,和英国基督教的宗教纷争有关。大约在公元16世纪末到17世纪,英国清教徒发起了一场来势猛烈的宗教改革运动,宣布脱离国教,另立教会,主张清除基督教圣公会内部的残余影响。 但是,在17世纪中叶时,保皇议会通过了《信奉国教法》,清教徒开始遭到政府和教会势力的残酷迫害,逮捕、酷刑,宗教审判,每时每刻都在威胁着清教徒。被逼无奈,他们只得迁往荷兰避难。但是,寄人篱下的日子不好过。在荷兰,清教徒不仅没能逃脱宗教迫害,而且饱受战争带来的痛苦和折磨。更令他们难以忍受的是,远在异国他乡,孩子们受不到"英国式的教育,对故土的感情一天一天地淡薄下去。为了彻底逃脱宗教迫害的魔爪,为下一代保留住祖国的语言和传统,他们再一次想到大迁徒。   天下虽大,何处是这群天涯沦落人的归宿呢?想来想去,他们把目光投向了美洲。哥伦布在100多年前发现的这块"新大陆",地域辽阔,物产富饶,而且有很多地方还是没有国王。没有议会、没有刽子手、未开发的处女地。"海阔凭鱼跃,天高任乌飞。"只有在这样的地方,他们才能轻轻松松地生活,自由自在地信奉、传播自己所喜欢的宗教,开拓出一块属于清教徒的人间乐园。   于是,清教徒的"著名领袖布雷德福召集了102名同伴,在1620年9月,登上了一艘重180吨,长90英尺的木制帆船——五月花号,开始了哥伦布远征式的冒险航行。对于航海来说,这艘有着浪漫名称的船只未免太小了。由于形势所迫,他们"选择"的,又是一年中最糟的渡洋季节。不过,怀着对未来的美好憧憬,为了找回失去的权利和自由,这群饱经忧患的人已经不顾一切了。   海上风急浪高,五月花号就像狂风暴雨中的一片树叶,艰难地向前漂泊着,几乎随时都有船毁人亡的危险。但在大家的共同努力下,船只没有遇到任何损害,并在航行了66天后,于11月21 日安抵北美大陆的科德角,即今天美国马萨诸塞州普罗文斯敦港。稍事休整后,五月花号继续沿海岸线前进。由于逆风和时差,它没有能到达预定的目的地——弗吉尼亚的詹姆斯敦,反而在圣诞节后的第一天,把他们送上了新英格兰的土地。   有意思的是,在这次充满危险的远征中,所有探险者只有一人死亡。但由于旅途中诞生了一名婴儿,使到达美洲的人不多不少,仍然是102名。移民都是虔诚的教徒,无不手划十字,衷心感谢上帝的眷顾。   现在,呈现在他们面前的,完全是一块陌生的土地,蜿蜒曲折的海岸线,显得沉寂、荒凉。因此,大约在一个月内,移民们不敢贸然靠岸,仍然以船为家。在此期间,他们派出了侦察队,乘坐小船在科德角湾沿线寻找定居地。一天,正在大家焦急等待的时候,侦察队返回来报告说,他们发现了一个适合移民们居住的、真正的"天堂"。"天堂"就是今天的普利茅斯港,这是一个天然的良港,非常适合五月花号停泊。港口附近有一个优良的渔场,可以提供大量的海产品。不远处一片连绵起伏的小山,就像一道天然屏障,把这块土地环绕起来。在明亮的阳光下,结了冰的小溪反射着晶莹的光泽,可以为移民们提供充足的淡水。开垦过的肥沃农田,一块一块整整齐齐地排列着。除此之外,他们还看到了一片虽然残破,却足以遮风避雨,帮助他们度过严冬的房屋u2026u2026看起来,一切都不错,而且不能再好了。唯一令他们感到迷惘的是,这片到处都有人类生活遗迹的土地,竟然看不到一个人影,一缕炊烟,显得是那样荒凉,倒好似事先就为他们准备的一样。后来才知道,这里原来是一个相当繁荣的印第安村落。几年前天花流行,全村人无一幸免,这才使它成了这群异国漂泊者的最佳避难所。   几天后,五月花号渡过了科德角湾,在普利茅斯港抛下了锚链。移民们划着小艇登陆时,按照古老的航海传统,首先登上了一块高耸于海面上的大礁石。五月花号上礼炮轰鸣,人声鼎沸,共同庆祝新生活的开始。后来,这块礁石就被称为"普利茅斯石",成为美洲新英格兰第一个永久性殖民地的历史见证。   不过,对这些渴望幸福的移民来说,第一个冬天并不美好。从大西洋上吹来的凛冽寒风,像魔鬼一样在空中嘶鸣,漫天的冰雪,无情地拍打着简陋的住房。在这一片冰天雪地里,移民们缺少必要的装备,也缺乏在这片土地上生活的经验。在繁忙劳动的重压下,不少人累倒了,累病了,恶劣的饮食,难以忍受的严寒,使更多的人倒地不起。接踵而来的传染病,夺去许多人的生命。一个冬天过去,历尽千难万险来到美洲的102名移民,只剩下了50个。几乎每天都有人死去,几乎天天都有一家或几家在做丧事。刚刚踏上这片土地时的欢乐没有了。每个人、的心头,都被一种空前绝望的气氛所笼罩。一个梦,一个刚刚开始的美梦,难道就这样被打破了吗?每个人都在思索着。   就在移民们束手无策,坐以待毙时,第二年春天的一个早晨,一名印第安人走进了普利茅斯村。他自我介绍说,他是临近村落的印第安酋长派来察看情况的。这是移民们来到美洲后接待的第一个客人。他们向客人倾诉了自己的来历以及所经受的种种无以复加的苦难。印第安人默默地听着,脸上流露出无限的怜悯和同情。事情就此有了转机,几天后,这名印度安人把他的酋长马萨索德带进了移民们的房屋。酋长是个慷慨热情的人,他向移民表示了热烈的欢迎,给他们送来了许多生活必需品作礼物。派来了最有经验、最能干的印第安人,教给移民们怎样在这块土地上生活,教他们捕鱼、狩猎、耕作以及饲养火鸡等技能。   这一年,天公作美,风调雨顺,再加上印第安人的指导和帮助,移民们获得了大丰收,终于闯过了生活的难关,过上了安定、富裕的日子,就在这一年秋天,已成为普利茅斯总督的布雷德福颁布了举行盛典,感谢上帝眷顾的决定,这就是历史上的第一个感恩节。当然,他没有忘记为移民们排忧解难的真正"上帝"——热情、好客、智慧的印第安人,特地邀请马萨索德和他手下的印第安人前来参加节日庆典。   印第安人欣然接受了邀请,提前送来了5只鹿作为礼物。11月底的一天,移民们大摆筵席,桌子上摆满了自山林中打来的野味和用自产的玉米、南瓜、笋瓜、火鸡等制作的佳肴。庆祝活动一共进行了3天,白天,宾主共同欢宴,畅叙友情。晚上,草地上燃起了熊熊簧火,在凉爽的秋风中,印第安小伙子同普利茅斯殖民地的年轻人一起跳舞、唱歌、摔跤、射箭,气氛非常热烈。   今天,在美国人心目中,感恩节是比圣诞节还要重要的节日。首先,它是一个长达4天的假日,足以使人们尽情狂欢、庆祝。其次,它也是传统的家庭团聚的日子。感恩节期间,散居在他乡外地的家人,都要赶回家过节,这已经成了全国性的习俗。此外,美国人一年中最重视的一餐,就是感恩节的晚宴。在美国这个生活节奏很快,竞争激烈的国度里,平日的饮食极为简单。美国的快餐流行世界,就是一个很好的说明。但在感恩节的夜晚,家家户户都大办筵席,物品之丰盛,令人咋舌。在节日的餐桌上,上至总统,下至庶民,火鸡和南瓜饼都是必备的。这两味"珍品"体现了美国人民忆及先民开拓艰难、追思第一个感恩节的怀;日情绪。因此,感恩节也被称为"火鸡节"。   尽管感恩节是合家团圆的日子,每年节日期间,仍然有成千上万人抽出余暇,前往普利茅斯港参观、游览,重温美国的历史。今天,不仅美国人过感恩节,加拿大人也把它视为例行节日。 ;

Thanksgiving began with the first European settlers in America. They gathered their crops, celebrated and gave thanks for the food.Tradition says Pilgrim settlers from England celebrated the first thanksgiving in sixteen twenty-one. There is evidence that settlers in other parts of America held earlier thanksgiving celebrations. But the Pilgrims" thanksgiving story is the most popular. The Pilgrims were religious dissidents who fled oppression in England. They went first to the Netherlands. Then they left that country to establish a colony in North America. The Pilgrims landed in sixteen twenty in what later became known as Plymouth, Massachusetts.Their voyage across the Atlantic Ocean was difficult. Their first months in America were difficult, too. About one hundred Pilgrims landed just as autumn was turning to winter. During the cold months that followed, about half of them died.

The fourth Thursday in November is called Thanksgiving Day. In the United States, it is an annual (每年的) occasion to show thanks to God for his goodness. As a historical, national and religious holiday, Thanksgiving Day began with the English in Plymouth Colony. As far back as 1621, after a long bitter winter and the gathering of the first harvest, these early settlers shared a feast with the local Indians and offered prayers of thanksgiving. President Washington proclaimed (宣布) the first national Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated on November 26, 1789. President Lincoln revived the custom in 1863. It was not until 1941 that the US Congress adopted a resolution, setting the fourth Thursday of November as an annual Thanksgiving Day. Thus what began as a religious celebration of the harvest has since become a nationwide holiday.Today Thanksgiving Day is usually a family day, celebrated with a traditional turkey dinner and a happy reunion.

Unit1 ANNE"S BEST FRIEND Anne"s Best Friend Do you want a friend whom you could tell everything to, like your deepest feelings and thoughts? Or are you afraid that your friend would laugh at you, or would not understand what you are going through? Anne Frank wanted the first kind, so she made her diary her best friend. Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands during World War Ⅱ. Her family was Jewish so nearly twenty-five months before they were discovered. During that time the only true friend was her diary. She said, ”I don"t want to set down a series of facts in a diary as most people do, but I want this diary itself to be my friend, and I shall call my friend Kitty.” Now read how she felt after being in the hiding place since July 1942. Thursday 15th June, 1944 Dear Kitty, I wonder if it"s because I haven"t been able to be outdoors for so long that I"ve grown so crazy about everything to do with nature. I can well remember that there was a time when a deep blue sky, the song of the birds, moonlight and flowers could never have kept me spellbound. That"s changed since I was here. …For example, one evening when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven in order to have a good look at the moon by my self. But as the moon gave far too much light, I didn"t dare open a window. Another time five months ago, I happened to be upstairs at dusk when the window was open. I didn"t go downstairs until the window bad to be shut. The dark, rainy evening, the wind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power; it was the first time in a year and a half that I"d seen the night face to face… …Sadly …I am only able to look at nature through dirty curtains hanging before very dusty windows. It"s no pleasure looking through these any longer because nature is one thing that really must be experienced. Yours, Anne Unit2 THE ROAD TO MODERN ENGLISH the Road to Modern English At the end of the 16th century, about five to seven million people spoke English. Nearly all of them lived in England. Later in the next century, people from England made voyages to conquer other parts of the world, and because of that, English began to be spoken in many other countries. Today, more people speak English as their first, second or a foreign language than ever before. Native English speakers can understand each other even if they don"t speak the same kind of English. Look at this example: British Betty: Would you like to see my flat? American Amy: Yes. I"d like to come up to you apartment. So why has English changed over time? Actually all languages change and develop when cultures meet and communicate with each other. At fist the English spoken in England between about AD 450 and 1150 was very different from the English spoken today. It was base more on German than the English we speak at present. Then gradually between about AD 500 and 1150, English became less like German because those who ruled England spoke first Danish and later French. These new settlers enriched the English language and especially its vocabulary. So by the 1600"s Shakespeare was able to make use of a wider vocabulary than ever before. In 1620 some British settlers moved to America. Later in the 18th century some British people were taken to Australia to. English began to be spoken in both countries. Finally by the 19th century the language was settled. At that time two big changes in English spelling happened: first Samuel Johnson wrote his dictionary and later Noah Webster wrote The American Dictionary of the English language. The latter gave a separate identity to American English spelling. English now is also spoken as a foreign or second language in South Asia. For example, India has a very large number of fluent English speakers because Britain ruled India from 1765 to 1947. During that time English became the language for government and education. English is also spoken in Singapore and Malaysia and countries in Africa such as South Africa. Today the number of people learning English in China is increasing rapidly. In fact, China may have the largest number of English learners. Will Chinese English develop its own identity? Only time will tell. Unit3 Travel journal Journey Down the Mekong My name is Wang Kun. Ever since middle school, my sister Wang Wei and I have dreamed about taking a great bike trip. Two years ago she bought an expensive mountain bike and then she persuaded me to buy one. Last year, she visited our cousins, Dao Wei and Yu Hang at their college if Kunming. They are Dai and grew up in western Yunnan Province near the Lancang River, the Chinese part of the river that is called the Mekong River in other countries. Wang Wei soon got time interested in cycling too. After graduating from college, we finally got the chance to take a bike trip. I asked my sister, “Where are we going?” It was my sister who first had the idea to cycle along the entire Mekong River from where it begins to where it ends. Now she is planning our schedule for the trip. I am fond of my sister but she has one serious shortcoming. She can be really stubborn. Although she didn"t know the best way of getting to places, she insisted that she organize the trip properly. Now I know that the proper way is always her way. I kept asking her, “When are we leaving and when are we coming back?” I asked her whether she had looked at a map yet. Of course she hadn"t; my sister doesn"t care about details. So I told her that the source of the Mekong is in Qinghai Province. She gave me a determined look -- the kind that said she would not change her mind. When I told her that our journey would begin at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters, she seemed to be excited about it. When I told her the air would be hard to breathe and it would be very cold, she said it would be an interesting experience. I know my sister well. Once she has made up her mind, nothing can change it. Finally, I had to give in. Several months before our trip, Wang Wei and I went to the library. We found a large atlas with good maps that showed details of world geography. From the atlas we could see that the Mekong River begins in a glacier to move quickly. It becomes rapids as it passes through deep valleys, traveling across western Yunnan Province. Sometimes the river becomes a water fall and enters wide valleys. We were both surprised to learn that half of the river is in China. After it leaves China and high altitude, the Mekong becomes wide, brown and warm. As it enters Southeast Asia, its pace slows. It makes wide bends or meanders through low valleys to the plains where rice grows. At last, the river delta enters the South China Sea. Unit4 ANIGHTTHEEARTHDIDN"TSLEEP Strange things were happening in the countryside of northeast Hebei. For three days the water in the village wells rose and fell, rose and fell.Farmers noticed that the well walls had deep cracks in them.A smelly gas came out of the cracks. In the farmyards, the chickens and even the pigs were too nervois to eat.Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide.Fish jumped out of their bowls and ponds. At about 3:00 am on july 28,1976,some people saw bright lights in the sky.The sound of planes could be heard outside the city of Tangshan even when no planes were in the sky.In the city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst.but the one million people of the city, who thiught little of these events, were asleep as usual that night. At 3:42 am everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world was at an end!Eleven kilometres directly below the city the greatest earthquake of the 20th century had begun. It was felt in Beijing, which is more than two hundred kilometres away.One-third of the nation felt it.A huge crack that was eight kilometres long and thirty metres wide cut across houses, roads and canals.Steam burst from holes in the ground.Hard hills of rock became rivers of dir.In fifteen terrible seconds a large city lay in ruins. The suffering of the people was extreme.Two-thirds of them died or were left without parents. The number of people who were killed or injured reached more than 400,000. But how could the survivors believe it was natural?Everywhere they looked nearly everything was destroyed. All of the city"s hospitals,75%of its factories and buildings and 90% of its homes were gone.Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves. No wind, however, could blow them away. Two dams fell and most of the bridges also fell or were not safe for travelling. The railway tracks were now useless pieces of steel.Tens of thousands of cows would never give milk again.Half a million oigs and millions of chickens were dead.Sand now filled the wells instead of water.People were shocked. Then, later that afternoon, another big quake which was almost as strong as the first one shook Tangshan. Some of the rescue workers and doctors were trapped under the ruins.More buildings fell down.Water, food, and electricity were hard to get.people begab to wonder how long the disaster would last. All hope was not lost.Soon after the quakes, the army sent 150,000 soldiers to Tangshan to help the rescue workers.Hundreds of thousands of people were helped. The army organized teams to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead.To the north of the city, most of the 10,000 miners were rescued from the coal mines there.Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed.Fresh water was taken to the city bu train, truck and plane.Slowly, the city began to breathe again. Unit5 ELIAS"STORY My name is Elias. I am a poor black worker in South Africa. The time when I first met Nelson Mandela was a very difficult period of my life. I was twelve years old. It was in 1952 and Mandela was the black lawyer to whom I went for advice. He offered guidance to poor black people on their legal problems. He was generous with his time, for which I was grateful. I needed his help because I had very little education. I began school at six. The school where I studied for only two years was three kilometers away. I had to leave because my family could not continue to pay the school fees and the bus fare. I could not read or write well. After trying hard, I got a job in a gold mine. However, this was a time when one had got to have a passbook to live in Johannesburg. Sadly I did not have it because I was not born there, and I worried about whether I would become out of work. The day when Nelson Mandela helped me was one of my happiest. He told my how to get the correct papers so I could stay in Johannesburg. I became more hopeful about my future. I never forgot how kind Mandela was. When he organized the ANC Youth League, I joined it as soon as I could. He said: “The last thirty years have seen the greatest number of laws stopping our rights and progress, until today we have reached a stage where we have almost no rights at all.” It was the truth. Black people could not vote or choose their leaders. They could not get the jobs they wanted. The parts of town in which they had to live were decided by white people. The places outside the towns where they were sent to live were the poorest parts of South Africa. No one could grow food there. In fact as Nelson Mandela said: “…we were put into a position in which we had either to accept we were less important or fight the government. We chose to attack the laws. We first broke the law in a way which was peaceful; when this was not allowed…only then did we decide to answer violence with violence. As a matter of fact, I do not like violence…but in 1963 I helped him blow up some government buildings. It was very dangerous because if I was caught I could be put in prison. But I was happy to help because I knew it would help us achieve our dream of making black and white people equal.

Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving Day is the most truly American of the national Holidays in the United States and is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country. In 1620,the settlers,or Pilgrims, they sailed to America on the May flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. After a tempestuous two-month voyage they landed at in icy November, what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. During their first winter, over half of the settlers died of[1] starvation or epidemics. Those who survived began sowing in the first spring. All summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future existence of the colony depended on the coming harvest. Finally the fields produced a yield rich beyond expectations. And therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the Lord be fixed[2]. Years later,President of the United States proclaimed the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day every year. The celebration of Thanksgiving Day has been observed on that date until today. The pattern of the Thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years. The big family dinner is planned months ahead. On the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes. There will be plum pudding, mince pie, other varieties of food and cranberry juice and squash. The best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They have been the most traditional and favorite food on Thanksgiving Day throughout the years. Everyone agrees the dinner must be built around roast turkey stuffed with a bread dressing[3] to absorb the tasty juices as it roasts. But as cooking varies with families and with the regions where one lives,it is not easy to get a consensus on[4] the precise kind of stuffing for the royal bird. Thanksgiving today is,in every sense,a national annual holiday on which Americans of all faiths and backgrounds join in to express their thanks for the year"s bounty and reverently ask for continued[5] blessings. 2. it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the Lord be fixed: decide可是个让你省事儿的好词了。 4. consensus on:就…… Thanksgiving Day. The writer O. Henry called it the one day that is purely American. Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday. But it has spiritual meaning. Some Americans attend religious services on the day before Thanksgiving, or on Thanksgiving morning. Others travel long distances to be with their families. They have a large dinner, which is the main part of the celebration. For many Americans, Thanksgiving is the only time when all members of a family gather. The holiday is a time of family reunion. Thanksgiving week is generally one of the busiest travel times of the year. Many Americans who usually visit family and friends by plane are driving shorter distances instead this week. Some mental-health experts say the attacks have frightened people. They say people feel safer and happier close to home. More than any other holiday, Thanksgiving is a celebration of family and home. Many people say that this year they are especially thankful for their families and friends and the good things in their lives. On Thanksgiving, people enjoy a long day of cooking, eating and talking. To my great surprise, the woman did not thank the young man; on the contrary, she glared at him coldly, which made him embarrassed. This incident set me thinking. If everyone acted like that woman, who would like to help others? And what would our society be like? If anyone gives you a hand, you should express your sincere gratitude to him or her. Only in this way will everyone be ready to help others and feel satisfied with it.

CMA是China Metrology Accredidation(中国计量认证/认可)的缩写。
