We had quite an adventure when we were on holiday in Europe. We got lost on the Alps(我们在欧洲旅行时遭遇了一次历险。 Venture这词常用于商业活动,如business venture指开拓新的业务范围;例: "I heard you were involved in some sort of business venture in the Philippines." "Yes, we opened a small recording studio in Manila. It turned out to be a winner-- far better than we expected."

TED-carrie Nugent: Adventures of an asteriod hunter

I am holding something remarkably old. It is older than any huam artifact, older than life on Earth, older than the continents大陆 and the oceans between them. This was formed over four billion years ago in the earliest days of the solar system while the plants were still forming. This rusty荒废、生锈的 lump of nickel镍 and iron may not appear special, but when it is cut open...you can see that it is different from earthly metals. This pattern模式、方式、模型 reveals metallic crystals that can only form out in space where molten溶化的 metal金属 can cool extremely非常、极端 slowly, a few degrees every million years. This was once part of a much larger object, one of millions left over after the plants formed. We call these objects asteroids小行星.  A steroids are our oldest and most numerouscosmic宇宙的 neighbors. Thisgraphic图形、图样的 shows near-Earth asteroids orbiting around the Sun, shown in yellow, and swinging close to the Earth"s orbit, shown in blue. The sizes of the Earth, Sun and asteroids have been greatly  exaggerated夸大  so you can see them clearly. Teams of scientists across the globe are searching for these objects. discovering new ones every day, steadily稳定地、坚固地 mapping绘制...的地图  near-Earth space. Much of this work is funded by NASA. I think of the search for these asteroids as a giantpublic works project, but instead of building a highway, we"re charting outer space, building anarchive档案  that will last for generations. These are the 1,556 near-Earth asteroids discovered just last year. And these are all of the known near-Earth asteroids, which at last count was 13,733. Each one has been imaged, cataloged and had its path around the Sun determinded. Although it varies from asteroid to asteroid, the paths of most asteroids can be predicted for dozens of years. And the paths of some asteroids can be predicted with incredible precision精确、准确 . For example, scientists at the Jet Propulsion 推进 Laboratory predicted where the asteroid Toutatis小行星图塔蒂斯 was going to be four years in advance to within 30 kilometers. In those four years, Toutatis traveled 8.5 billion kilometers. That"s fractional很小的、很少的,微不足道的 precision of 0.000000004. Now, the reason I have this beautiful asteroid fragment is because, like all neighbors, asteroids sometimes drop by unexpectedly. Three years ago today, a small asteroid exploded爆炸、 over the city of Chelyabinsk 俄罗斯车里雅宾斯克,Russia . That object was about 19 meters across, or about as big as a convenience store. Objects of the size hit the Earth every 50 years or so. 66 million years ago, a much larger object hit the Earth, causing a massive extinction. 75 percent of plant and animal species were lost, including, sadly, the dinosaurs. That object was about 10 kilometers across, and 10 kilometers is roughly the cruising巡航、漫游 altitude of a 747 jet. So the next time you"re in an airplane, snag抓住、被构筑 a window seat, look out and imagine a rock so enormous that resting on the ground, it just grazes擦过 your wingtip翼梢. It"s so wide that it takes your plane one full mimute to fly past it. That"s the size of the asteroid that hit the Earth. It has only been within my lifetime that asteroids have been considered a credible threat to our planet. And since then, there"s been a focused effort underway to discover and catalog these objects. I am lucky enough to be part of this effort. I"m part of a team of scientists the use NASA"s NEOWISE telescope. Now, NEOWISE was not designed to find asteroids. It was designed to orbit the eat                 h and look far beyond our solar system to seek out the coldest stars and the most luminous明亮的,发光的 galaxies. And it did that very well for its designed lifetime of seven month. But today, six years later, it"s still going. We"ve repurposed稍加修改 it to discover and study asteroids. And although it"s a wonderful little space robot, these days it"s kind of like  a used car. The cryogen制冷剂【化】 that used to refrigerate冷藏 its sensors传感器 is long gone, so we joke that its air-conditioning is broken. It"s got 920 million miles on the odometer里程表, but it still runs great and reliably takes a photograph of the sky every 11 seconds. It"s taken 23 photos sice I began speaking to you. One of the reasons NEOWISE is so valuable is that it sees the sky in the thermal infrared热红外波段. That means that instead of seeing the sunlight that asteroids reflect , NEOWISE sees the heat that they emit发出 . This is a vital capability since some asteroids are as drak as coal and can be diffcult or impossible to spot注意到 with other telescopes. But all asteroids, light or dark, shine brightly for NEOWISE. Astronomers are using every technique at    their disposal to discover and study asteroids. In 2010, a historic milestone里程碑 was reached. The community, together, discocered over 90 percent of asteroids bigger than one kilometer across-objects capable of massive destruction to Earth. But the job"s not done yet. An object 140 meters or bigger could decimate严重破坏 a medium-sized country. So far, we"ve only found 25 percent of those. We must keep searching the sky for neat-Earth asteroids. We are the only species able to understand calculus微积分 or build telescopes. We know how to find these objects. This is our responsibility. If we found a hazardous危险的、有害的 asteroid with significant early warning, we could nudge轻推 it out of the way. Unlike earthquakes, hurricanes or volcanic eruptions喷发, an asteroid impact撞击 can be precisely精确地 predicted and prevented. What we need to do now is map near-Earth space. We must keep searching the sky. Thank you.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Based in the mid 1800s before the Civil War, the novel chronicles the journey of and relationship between Huckleberry Finn and a runaway southern slave, Jim, as they flee south on the Mississippi River. The pair have a journey that bring them together and that shows Mark Twain"s dislike for slavery in the southern culture.

the adventures of tom sawyer汤姆索亚历险记读后感

APAX Group(川力企划)和美国Discovery Channel(就是播《流言终结者》和贝爷的《荒野求生》的那个电视频道)联手创办的。

Seacole traveled widely before arriving in London, where her offer to volunteer as a nurse in the war was met with racism and refusal. Undaunted, she set out independently to the Crimea, where she acted as doctor and "mother" to wounded soldiers while running her business, the "British Hotel." Told with energy, warmth, and humor, her remarkable life story and accounts of hardships at the battlefront offer significant insights into the history of race politics.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn 的SUMMARY

Although probably no other work of American literature has been the source of so much controversy, Mark Twain"s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is regarded by many as the greatest literary achievement America has yet produced. Inspired by many of the author"s own experiences as a river-boat pilot, the book tells of two runaways — a white boy and a black man — and their journey down the mighty Mississippi River. When the book first appeared, it scandalized reviewers and parents who thought it would corrupt young children with its depiction of a hero who lies, steals, and uses coarse language. In the last half of the twentieth century, the condemnation of the book has continued on the grounds that its portrayal of Jim and use of the word "nigger" is racist. The novel continues to appear on lists of books banned in schools across the country.Nevertheless, from the beginning The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was also recognized as a book that would revolutionize American literature. The strong point of view, skillful depiction of dialects, and confrontation of issues of race and prejudice have inspired critics to dub it "the great American novel." Nobel Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway claimed in The Green Hills of Africa (1935), for example, that "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huck Finn. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since."

求:adventures of Tom Sawyer故事概要

Tom Sawyer, a mischievous redheaded orphan taken in by his Aunt Polly, goes through a series of adventures involving his friends, Joe Harper and Huckleberry Finn. Tom is an escape master, and a professional trickster. He escapes punishment many times by his tricks. Though he is often foolish and unpredictable, he also is somewhat smart and has a good sense of humor. When not trying to win his sweetheart, Becky Thatcher, Tom is either getting into mischief or going on an adventure. Many times, Tom suddenly changes from his grinning self into a fearsome pirate or Indian. His laugh changes into a bloodcurdling yell or a barking captain"s voice. Tom Sawyer"s main doings are racing bugs, impressing girls with fights and stunts in the schoolyard, getting lost in a cave, and playing pirates on the Mississippi River. The best known passage in the book describes how Sawyer persuades his friends to whitewash, or paint, a long fence for him.
